How to remove E-brake handle and boot

My E-brake handle thumb button was chromed plastic. The chrome is flaking off and I'd like to replace it with something clean. How do I get the handle off to replace the thumb button? Anyone have a suggestion for a what vehicles came with a all black thumb button?
