Carbon Filter Has Broken Nipple Any Way to Fix vs. Replace?

Band Wagon
Hello!
I am a newbie to Honda Civic wagons (mine is a 1990, base model 2WD, 5spd) and car maintenance in general and I've ran into a kunundrum, as of this stormy Sunday Southern California day. While trying to replace the fuel filter, my boyfriend was pushing a bit hard on the hose that connects the charcoal canister to the engine-y type dealy-o and broke off the nipple on the canister. I'm trying to do research as to how expensive this will be to replace and it appears it'll run me in the $180 area, which I do not have. The other part that blows, is that the fuel filters banjo bolts were so tight, that we also weren't able to replace it, which is another $80.
At this point, I've been sitting with my head in my hands for an hour or so, trying to figure out what I should do and low and behold I am here, because sitting with my head in my hands, pondering something I know nearly nothing about, has gotten me nowhere, but here on the Civic wagon forum. I am asking kindly for suggestions as how to maybe fudge the nipple with something temporarily and although the car runs, is this dangerous to drive? Actually, can someone explain what the heck a charcoal canister does?
Blurgh. Help, please.

the car is certainly still drivable, in fact several "modders" get rid of it altogether.
junkyards should have plenty, if not for less then $5
