Slight grinding when going straight, fine when turning?!

Just like it says...

My wagon is at 129,xxx miles, and has just started this noise. From the front end, and most likely the front drivers side. At first i thought it was because i had some blizzaks fitted, but it has started to get a bit louder with each thousand miles. I have just noticed that if i turn to the right, the noise is not really noticeable, but is the same if i turn left.

I have checked all dust covers, pads and calipers, and no, it's not rubbing on anything.

My only guess is the wheel berings are shot? or atleast the left wheel, but id replace both just to be safe...

All other suspension pieces are tight and sound.

anyone else have any suggestions?

Usually wheel bearings make noise when TURNING, not going straight....

hmmm.

im stumped.

jack up the car and shake the tire and see if there is play up and down and side to side.if there is and everything is tight, the wheel bearing is shot.brake calipers aren't seized?

Either bearings or an axle. I'd lean more toward the bearings.

Yep, the axles were recently replaced. It's gotta be the bearings!
  • I had a bearing going bad and my mechanic friend asked me if the noise went away when I turned or put pressure on that side, and I told him it did. He immediately said bearings. Went home, removed the bearing, pressed in a new one, and was good to go.
  • I agree with the bearing theory :)

Go figure, I just repaired my whole brake system and all of a sudden I was getting 300 degree brake temps. Turns out my bearings are so worn out it's causing the rotor to lean inside the caliper and heat up. Gahh, talk about fixing one thing and breaking another while your at it.
