Blower Motor Question

Hi,

My blower motor works fine, but not nearly as strong as newer cars. Just curious if this is the nature of the beast being an older car or if it gets tired or gummed up. If the latter is true is there a way to clean/refurbish it or am I better off replacing it with an NOS one (assuming I could get my hands on one)?

Also, the air blows much harder from the center vents than from the sides. Is this normal or do I maybe have some sort of blockage?

Thanks for any info!

Mic

The most common cause of this problem in our particular cars is, in fact, a blockage. Since there's no filter for the outside air being pulled in (or the recirculated air), the AC evaporator fins are usually stuffed solid with debris. To effectively clean the evaporator it's best to remove it, but in a pinch you can buy a can of NON TOXIC self-rinsing coil cleaner and try to let the goo drain through the condensate drain tube. I don't recommend it, though. I tried it and ended up pulling the core out anyway.
  • Thanks for the info on the evaporator - that certainly makes sense. next question: since the book I have says pretty much to not touch it, if I were to pull it and clean the fins what do I need to be careful of? Or should I not touch it if I'm unsure. I don't want to break the A/C (especially since I live in Vegas).

Before I read this I pulled out the blower motor (just the motor from the housing - the evaporator totally gets in the way and the book I'm using basically says not to touch it and to have it done by a qualified a/c person (not me). The blower motor was caked in crap (likely from years of crud coming in through the vents and whatnot). I pulled it apart and thoroughly cleaned it and I don't notice much of a difference if any at all. At least I was able to make the recirculate lever a bit easier to move.

I'd love to see how it was day one from the factory as a comparison.

Center blows harder 'cuz that's where the air comes in first. It also feeds the side vents. So to concentrate where you want it togo.Close the vents you don't want the air to go.That's what I did in esample #1(below).
Here are some things to try:
1)read the following: +++SiWagon TIP: QUICK Winter Warming & Defogging
2)Try these 2 modes. The recirc mode & the outside air mode.
3)Depending where you want the air to go.Try shutting different combinations of the outer side vents & 1 of the center vents.

often times the ducting under the dash is not installed correctly and it can cause the same problem you are seeing.

i just replaced my blower motor last night in my ED hatch and i noticed one of the ducts was not seated correctly.

now that its fixed, holy cow, when its on recirculate, it blows WAYYY harder than before.

    lol..?? lol.
