Can you have main relay troubles when it's cold?

My ex-gf's wagon ('91 DX auto) didn't start yesterday. It's been really cold in our area the past few days.. like -25 to -30 in the morning. I was wondering if this would kill a main relay. I suspect her main relay has been on the fritz for awhile now because it takes her car a good 5 seconds of cranking to start usually. So she has a main relay already.

Thoughts?

Coil and ignitor. You could always try it out though, main relays aren't that much.
  • It has a distributor that is less than a year old.

My Accord also takes a few cranks before it fires up too, and it's got a brand new distributor. Not sure about it's main relay though. It's on my list.

It's not lacking power when it cranks?

Cold like that would affect the battery and be affected by a dying alternator
  • It's got an alternator that is less than a year old as well. The battery is kind of old though. I gave it to her when I replaced the battery in my former RT4WD last winter. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to replace it just to have a new one in there.

Ya definitiely. Your temps are crazy. I replaced a few batterys in Arizona.

Try the battery than, my mom and dads trucks do the same thing in the mornings. It's cold here in Idaho, not as low as your temp, both of the trucks do the same thing. Cranks for a bit before actually starting the trucks.
