Cracked manifold repair question.

Couldn't pass SMOG. The tech said he thought it was an exhaust issue. I checked everything along the bottom of the car, but couldn't find anything. So I took off the heat shield on the manifold, and guess what I found, a cracked manifold. I need a quick fix for the SMOG. Is there away to fix instead of replacing?

  • you can weld them back together. might be a quick fix for smog. just die grind out the cracked area and plop a mig weld over it and put the splash guard back on . they won't notice. probably won't last long but enough to get through smog.
my other car is a 1974 saab 99 ems, and repeated welding on the manifold over 20 years made it impossible to weld. but they were doing weird stuff like using it as an engine mount of all things. I ended up making a custom manifold out of a bunch of schedule 40 elbows.
  • Thanks for the reply, but I don't weld. I found this product: ThermoSteel Exhaust System Repair Kit. Anybody have experience with it?

Manifolds are cheap - you could probably find one in your area for like 5 or 10 bucks. Wouldn't take more than about 20 minutes to swap either.
  • Cheapest I could find is 38.00, and for that I could get my DC header modded to fit(already have the parts for the mod).
