CEL comes on while cruising at HWY Speeds

So here's my problem...after running for about 5 min. and hopping onto the nearest highway the check engine light decides to turn on. I usually cruise around 70-74mph :wink: a little fast...but never had a problem untill today. When I finally arrived at my destination I shut off the car, let stand for a minute, then turned it over and no CEL. So I thought it was fine, untill it did the same thing to me on my return trip. Got home and turned off, then on...and no CEL.

Has anyone had this happen to them or something similar so that I can figure out a possible problem and solution.

    Yes, do not turn the wagon off until you check the cel. It seems the wagons reset the cel everytime the engine is turned on and off.

    Your speedometer is working properly, right? Sometimes when the speedometer cluster is not working, a cel comes on after running your vehicle for a while at highway speed... It already happended to me...

    o2 sensor. Mine was doing the same thing. Getting on it to reach cruising speed on the highway or getting on it to go up certain hills would trigger the light and it seemed like it was the same hills and same entrance ramps every time. I could push in the clutch turn off the switch for a second, turn it back on and the light would go off. I had about 6 months on the o2 and thought it was good. I decided to change it out - problem cured.
  • Checked the CEL and it's either a 1 or a 10, I can't quite tell.

    Speedo seems to be accurate. Maybe I'll switch the o2 sensor just to be safe.

    a 1 blinks once.. a 10 blinks ten times lol.
    1= O2 sensor, simple fix.
  • Okay that makes sense ahaha, I just wasn't sure... I also have a CEL 14 code on a friends car if anyone knows that one.

    There is a thread that explains all the cel's. Check that for your friends code 14.
