Early 88 d16a6? smaller crank pulley?

i was workin' on swapping some parts from my old a6 to my new z6 and i came across 2 things.

first it has the cast iron main caps which i figured would be there

and

second the crank pulley on the left (that came off the a6) has no dampener, smaller hole and a smaller bolt.......

Was just wondering if anyone had any info and if its special besides the main caps....

    88's are such basterds
  • Yup! Many 88s had the smaller crank snout (22mm), whereas the later 88s and 89-on had the 24mm crank snout. I think you'll also find a mix of 88s and 89s with the iron main bearing caps/aluminum girdle, and starting in 1990 you won't see them anymore. Full aluminum 1 piece girdles.

All the z6 motors I've ever worked on had different pulleys than the a6, the shaft is the same, but the pulley goes on further and like rubs on the timing belt covers. Not sure on the girdle.

i have another 1.6 crank with in good shape. I want to use this crank pulley cuz its lighter and just the cool old school look of it is different.... even though no one will ever see it haha. I am getting some custom shims made by a buddy for my lil LSD swap in my rear end maybe ill bring him this too and see if he can make the hole bigger and re-notch the key.

I was gunna sell this motor but i think im gunna wrip the head off, swap in the new crank, and store it away to maybe build someday..... maybe a 1.9 bottom end...... kinda cool with the cast iron caps never acutally seen a set.
  • You should be able to find that same crank pulley with the 24mm center bore to fit the later generation crank. The machining of the keyway will be a pain in the ass, and it's pretty critical to get it perfectly placed, or your ignition timing won't be accurate (unless you use a dial gauge and re-mark the timing mark on the pulley).

spent the night taking it apart sure enough spun a bearing so i yanked the crank and tossed her. shes down to the block, crank, pan, and some misc bolts and wrapped up under a shelf till i either sell it or build it someday.

just so happens my friend needs the crank pully he has a good crank with the smaller snout so it all works out. man what a stinky ass motor YUK.
