hatch strut anomoly

Here's my story. My hatch struts have never been able to keep my hatch open from day one. It sucks to have the hatch fall on my head while I'm loading something heavy! :x

The first set I ordered was wagon specific but for whatever reason, the strut body is nearly 3" too long. The parts guy measures the struts on my car (25" fully extended), orders the exact same struts which coincidentally are 3dr Civic specific and guess what...they don't keep my hatch up!

Can someone measure their struts and provide a part # please? I'm running out of ideas.

  • Are they mounted the same way at the top? If they are made with two ball joints on each end, mount the strut to the very bottom hole on the hatch when the hatch is open. I ran into the exact problem, then I got to thinking and flipped the strut over and then mounted it in the other hole.

    It works.

 Parts dude screwed up  :!:

Wgn hatch struts are Wgn.specific.In most cases u can just order 1.Usually the sides that's leaking. It's nice to replace both 'cuz it acts like power lift hatch.

  • I got mine at Advance Auto Parts. Part #4909.
You can purchase them from there online site as well. Here is the link.http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDeta ... 65&ptset=A
  • keith750 - Can you measure your struts fully extended (with hatch open)? I'd like to compare the length.

This is the wagon specific set he ordered for me. Like I mentioned, the strut body was nearly 3" too long. I could not install at all.

  • I will measure them tomorrow, if i were you i would get the ones that i got, the part #4909's, they worked perfectly. I had to change the bolts with the ball on the end that the shocks snap onto. just pulled back the panel, took the ones ones out, put the ones ones in, and snapped the new ones in place. also you could ask them if my part number i gave you and the part number you have are interchangable.
  • Great advice. I'm going to ask specifically for part #4909 and since my parts guy is actually my buddy, I won't have any trouble exchanging them.

Thanks for measuring the struts for me!
