  • days, I remember we would check

Those were the same days were people kicked that tyre to
get an overall diagnose for the car ...

    nevermind my post
    i vote jude's explanation...
3 paragraphs generally all you need to know
about installing shock, springs on any car
    for appetizers ...

    : )

Well, my shocks don't seem to be busted. I think they're just compressed too much, since I have the rear end ''slammed'' on the springs/sleeves. I'm going to try to get a bigger size tire/rim combo and raise it up some, maybe it'll improve the ride.
  • Hi guys,
I've bein reading stickied to be more informed on how to lower my car, but I'm still a bit confused on some parts...
First, when talking about the shocks, it's recomended EF shocks. And when talking about the springs it is recomended DA springs.
Now my question is, Is it stock EF shocks and stock DA springs? or aftermarket lowering EF shocks and lowering DA springs?

The reason why I wanna make this clear for me is because I'm planing to go to the junkyard and see what I can find.
For what I've read, I was planing look around and get some stock EF shocks, and stock DA springs. The front part shouldn't be any problem since it's the same as all EF. For the rear, I would have to cut off the stock DA springs in order to have lower the car on the stock EF shocks.
    Is this correct??
Now, any year of the EF and DA would fit nice on my car or do I need to find exactly those parts to be the same year as my car? <My car year is 88.
Also I may try to look for sway bars, at least try to get the rear one. For this I would need to change the LCA of my car. Can I change it with a LCA of a DA? or just stick with the EF?
The way I'm going...I want to lower the car for looks but also don't leave the ride comfort. Not just looks but also performance :)
    Thanks guys,
As u all can see, I'm pretty newbie to all of this... :?
  • Wow that's alot of questions! First of all, the 88's need 88 year specific struts due to the design of the lower control arms. The next thing is that you would need to mod a lower rear strut bar to fit, look for the sticky on this subject. I have an 88 RT, i used 88 crx struts and DA coilovers. Gives me a great ride. Hope this helps a little.

I swapped my 88 lca's out with 90-91 Si lca's and they work great.
  • so can you just replace the wagons shocks and springs with any other ef's and it lowers the wagon?
  • You would also need to buy lowering springs or coilovers
  • Just a though But…
If you lower your wagon its possible that your going to change your camber to the negative. Thus the insides of your tires are going to become toast a lot sooner then you would like.
    Does this make logical sence?

Has this happened to anyone whos lower there wagon?
  • Of course it happens, that's what camber kits are for....
  • This happens on all Honda's. Different length control arms on the front make and the pivot point of the rear suspension will always make them have negative camber. Some is ok and will actually help your car in the corners, too much is useless. Most tire wear comes from the toe being off. If your tires have negative camber its true there will be more contact on the inside patch of the tire but that won't really wear them down fast. Its if you have negative camber and the toe is misaligned. If you've ever seen someone who has lowered there car and not done an alignment you would see what i'm talking about, front tires inside patch is worn good but the rear tires still good eventhough they have negative camber. My poorboy Honda days consisted in constantly swappping the rear tires to the front and visa-versa
  • Agreed with above^

On My type R I have over 3degree negaitve camber but a good alignment and my tyres have hardly and camber wear after 10,000ks

Its not the camber doing the damage, its toe in or out

So, in order to maintain stock height in the front, you could use any stock Civic EF strut and coil?
  • insane_oneinsane_one Band Wagon
sooo if you wanna lower your wagon. just get regular EF lowering springs/coilovers.
UNLESS yo have an 88 then u needa swap out your rear struts and LCA with 89-91's
    right?

headrests from a volkswagen will work as long as you use DA seat rails and DC headrest holes with a R2D2 seat. savvy?

spring heights are different between 2WD and AWD by a few mm. other then that its the same. so any aftermarket Civic and CRX will work on either Wagon (as long as you stay year specific)

Diz, what would happen if I put stock DA springs and struts on my car? I want to lift it about an inch.
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
DA springs 'n such will raise the wagon about an inch, so go for it!
  • bam-bambam-bam Council Member
Thanks. I need a little more load carrying capacity

  • Hey people im def a noob at all this suspension talk about wagons but i need some help.

i just purchased a 1990 civic wagon which came with coilovers that i believe are shot!
i want to replace the coilovers with shocks and springs but keep the same height that i have now. the car is definately lowered but not slammed to the ground. the front and rear are about even (making the car look level to the ground) which is the look i want with the new shocks and springs. by the way i use this car as a daily driver to work and back and i have to drive on some pretty rough streets with some dips, potholes, and bumps.

the way im understanding the sticky is that i should purchase EF shocks and DA lowering springs. is this correct?

i know i can buy the tokico illuminas because they are adjustable but i dont want to spend that much money so i was thinking of goin with this setup:
Tokico HP shocks for the 1990 EF along w/ Tein high tech lowering springs for the 1990 DA.
will this setup give me close to even height in the front and in the rear?
will the ride be stiff or semi-comfortable?
any advice or recommendation would be greatly appreciated
    thanks

I just had DC Integra rear struts with Eibach lowering springs, It dropped the rear about 3/4" from stock, which evened up the fender gaps pretty well. I know this doesn't directly answer your question, just another option.
In the past 3 weeks I've tried
    stock wagon
stock '92 Integra (lifted about TWO inches)
DC Integra/lower (about 3/4" under stock and too soft)
'92 Integra with one coil cut off ( still too high.)

I haven't towed the camper yet, just changed the springs last night. My hope is to remain level with the added tongue weight. Next I'm going to add ebay adjusters to stock wagon springs and struts.
