Pedal assembly year specific?

Well my the clutch on my pedal assembly on my 88 real time just broke about an hour and a half ago and I've been spending this whole time doing research since I don't know shit about cars. Well I read that the pedal assemblies are wagon specific but are they year specific? I have a wrecked 90 real time but when I checked to see if it was messed up it was completely different. The clutch pedal in the 90 has this giant spring thing and the 88 has a tube that connects to the rest of the pedals (sorry if that doesn't make sense). So I was wondering if anyone knows if a 90-91 pedal assembly will fit into a 88-89? Thanks for any help.
