What the heck is that jack thing?

I believe correct me if I am wrong but it looks like a motorcycle jack! lol Hey whatever works right!
  • I went down to the shop to do some work on the wagon tonight. Open the dorr and what do I see? Then I wondered to myself, why the hell don't I have one?

  • Those belong on my wagon
  • You can kind of see in the picture, but those boxes on the right are really 3 pallets of camoplast tracks. Im going to see if we have a used set i can mock up on the wagon over xmas break :)
  • Seafoamed the wagon today. I dont know if it helped at all to tell you the truth. I think its all in my head
  • Went and checked out the timing belt because it was running a little goofy. With the bottoms end at tdc it looked like the cam was a tooth off. But there was a mark on the adjustable cam gear where it should have been. So moved it there and it runs a lot better.

Then went to set ignition timing and the bulb in the timing light went out haha
  • Do those camoplast tracks bolt onto a 4x100 lug pattern?

I really, really want a set for my RT...
  • I think they do, bit we only sell utv ones and the heaviest one its about 1600lbs. Although the camoplast says they are rated up to 2500lbs. You might need an adapter of some sort to fit over the hubs. We looked at how they would fit on my wagon and it would need a pretty decent lift
  • I was looking at the mattracks website. The utXL models (I think) are rated to 3500lbs...

And then I found a set in NY used for $1500, but for what it would cost to have them shipped and all that, I'd be better off holding out for a set for $2K used. There's tons of them running around ND and if a loaded down 4 seater enclosed JD Ute is safe to rock on those, I don't see it weighing a whole hell of a lot less than the wagon.

Maybe its just pipe dreams, but if I stumble across a set of these cheap I will make them work so I can bring my car up to the Big Horns when we go snowmobiling :)
  • Ya I think camoplast only does atv and utv ones. Everyone wants them for their wagon. The only thing that would suck is the ones we sell are geared down 30% and unless u are making decent power second gear is probably all it could pull. The other thing I was thinking about is the rear wheels would never be driven unless the front slips, which wouldn't happen. So it might cause premature wear on the fronts
  • I don't think that I'd ever drive it unless on snow if I had them on my car, I'm talking I want to drive where there are snowmobile trails and to go exploring in the mountains. I get what you're saying about the fronts never spinning, although I think on ice/snow it wouldn't wear unevenly as there would probably be enough slip in the fronts to transfer some power to the rear. I'd imagine if you were really trying to pull a hill it would be 4wd...

Of course I tell my buddy about this and he simply says "no, it wont work". He has little faith, which makes me want to do it that much more. I know I wouldn't be the first to do it, but that's not why I want to. I just want to do it so I could go places with the family (even with the little one) that I couldn't bring them otherwise.

Plus, my half redneck side thinks this would be awesome.

What brand of tracks do you guys sell?
  • I have a plan for awd wagons. Just need to take a look at some stuff and get measurements.
  • We sell camoplasts. And i know it can be done, im just wondering about the bearings in the front, but i guess most of the stuff we put it on has a locking front diff anyways
  • Got any "demo" sets floating around? lol.

  • Took the wagon down the black hills in south dakota for a snowboarding trip. Was pretty fun, snow was absolute crap. Definitely felt under powered going up the bigger hills with 3 people and a full load. Used about a quart of oil on the 250 mile trip down and about 50 miles while we were down there. It was pretty cool being down in historic deadwood and lead over new years.

  • Well I think that trip to the mountain was the straw that broke the camels back. Was on my way back to school, made it 100 miles into the trip and motor started knocking. Sucks because I just changed the oil yesterday, did a compression test and it came out good. So now I'm stuck at a truck stop in mandan, nd waiting for a truck and a trailer. Lucky I wasn't further from home. Now just have to decide what I want to do with the new motor.
  • heh, that's what killed the motor the first time before I owned it. PO took it up a pass in Colorado near Boulder to go skiing and blew the head gasket.
  • I've got another A6 Bottom end sitting in my shop. I don't know how good it is though, but it was running in my friend's car...
  • K swap time!!!!!!!!!!

    I wish dude
  • So I figured I would do this next motor cheap(but right). Kory proonthesnow is getting my an a6 block, he "claims" i can just put on a head and go. I'm gonna hold you to that:) jk but I'm thinking if this y8 head is fine I will just toss that on there. Here is where I'm confused/worried/misinformed:

y8 head gasket puts this combo at ~11:1
    z6 head gasket nets ~10.2:1
Will the p28 be able to run these CR on its STOCK map. Or what ecu should I run(I don't want to tune/chip)?

    Now Distributor:
I want to say I'm using the a6 dizzy now, which one should I use. I'm pretty sure its the y8 one, but I would need to use a jumper. But it also depends on which ecu I'm using?

Going to use the y8 timing belt with an adjustable cam gear. What do I need to adjust that to? my old set up run best with it set advanced 6*

Ignition: What should I set it to?

I just can't seem to find any solid information. I've been looking all afternoon and still came up with everything I already knew. use the same TB as head, heres the compression rations, use a p28 or pm6. I just get flamed if I ask stupid questions.
  • How many miles were on it when it died? I think it had 238K when I sold it to you.

Have you considered a SOHC ZC from hmotorsonline?
  • I think I got it with like 235 but it was going to turn 250 during the 300 miles trip it didn't make. It had its rough times last winter and I got a little rev happy every once in a while trying to keep up with traffic
  • I can't make any promises on the bottom end, but it should be fine if you put a head on it and do the work right :)

I'll double check it over before dragging it to you though - I'd feel awefully bad if you wasted time and money trying to get it in and it wasn't working properly.
  • its all good man. I'm gonna pull the caps and check the bearings anyways. And I would have no problem throwing new rings and bearings in there. I'm just trying to decide if I should rebuild the oil pump
  • Decided I'm gonna convert to obd1 and run a p28. Maybe try and find a y8 intake manifold. Which cam would go best with that setup?

And I need some new tires and an alignment. Going to keep the rt steelies, you guys think I can run a 205/75/14? or should I stick with a 195?
