Shoudl I go for it?

Hi Guys,

A wagon has appeared for sale in my city, they're asking $2000AU for it.

Scary thing (imo) is that it's got rust *in* the a-pillars.

How bad of a problem is it to have rust in the a-pillars?

  • I would pick it up, if the rust scares you, or goes all the way through, you can part that car out to us Americans for more than your purchase price. I call dibs on the lower center console, roof rails, taillights, and the rear cargo interior if it comes down to parting!! Thanks.
  • i want the bumper and swap haha

Buy It!! Doesn't look that bad.
  • id buy that for sure!
  • Looks righteous! Go for the gold.
  • Use a rust removal chemical to get rid of the rust.
Wipe the surface down with alcohol.
    Spray it down with primer.
Fill that portion of the pillar with Bondo Hair.
    Sand smooth.
    Re-primer.
    Paint.

What's with the "Dual Carb"? Does it really have carburetors?
  • Sure does.
Its the same engine as our ED3 sedans (ie: a D15B4 Dual-Carb)

The fact that it has a hitch on it always scares me with wagons, I know they are tough little things, but you never know what the person was trying to pull.
  • yes, go for it.
  • i kinda like those seats
  • Ok, so I went to have a look at this car yesterday, twas about an hours drive away.

I've actually never seen one in real-life before so it was smaller than what I was expecting. (I thought it would be at least a little longer than my ED3 sedan but it seems to "look" shorter?)

Anyway, had a good look at the car. The body is relatively straight apart from some nasty bits of cancer *in* the a-pillars and the front bumper being replaced with a grey one. No doubt the car has had a hit in the front at some point. Interior is so-so with some non-standard esky thing screwed in as a centre-console (taking up some of the rear passengers leg-room)

    Driving:
Ok, the owners claimed to have spent $3000 fixing the gearbox or something, but i didn't notice anything in the driveline running well. The gears are notchy/grabby from 1st - 2nd & then worse again from 2nd -> 3rd. Grinds into reverse as well. Shift feel is extremely loose, it feels like I'm flailing a beach towel about. Front CV joints are on their way out and are noisy in both left and right turns, and this was all during some very slow speeds(under 60kph), I can imagine it being much worse at freeway speeds (100+kph)

    The Good.
The steering was incredibly light. It felt like I was driving on a sheet of ice. (ie: aussie wagons never came with P/S) I couldn't believe it at first and it kinda made me a little excited to think that the CRX could easily run with no P/S when considering that wagons are heavier(?).

    The Bad.
Having never seen a wagon, the boot space is very small. Only big enough to put some shopping bags in. The owner wasnt very interested in 'selling' the car so I don't know how much more space could be had from folding the rear seats down. But looking at the boot only, it appeared smaller than the boot in the wife's Jazz. (Would love to know if I could get a CRX bonnet in there for example) Also, I didn't know that the tailgate has no handle. You can use a release in the car but you can only pop the tailgate via a key from the rear
(our CRXs has that little groove to hold onto but the wagon has nothing like that which was kinda weird... or maybe it does but i just didn't see it.)

Do I still like the idea of a wagon? Yes. It's an ED/EF and they're still my fave hondas. If the price comes down more, I might go for this blue one, but I doubt it. Ultimately I'd love a gold one more a lot more though.

    Yet another honda related dillema...

I was going to say go for it.
  • I definately do want a wagon as I'm absolutely in love with them now. But the dilemma is:
    - do you buy one in a colour you don't mind (blue), or wait for one in the colour you absolutely love (gold)

    What would you guys do?!?!
  • IMO It sounds too high of a price for it. That's taking into account all the bad you mentioned. It needs a severe price drop, cause it sounds like a lot of repairs are needed to be road worthy.

I know gold was sold in the States.88-89.I don't know if it was offered overseas.
  • wyld,

    yes.. get it. decent price.
  • Cars are expensive in Australia, so asking opinion about price from a whole lot of people overseas isnt really going to of any benefit is it?

$2000 might be a very acceptable price for the Australian market, I know in NZ our cars are about 25% cheaper a lot of the time due to a large volume of Japanese Imports

I would pay double for that if you could get it here (Tacoma, Wa, USA)
