D16z6 tapping for intermediate shaft

okay so, my wagons d16a6 is about to die (its burning both oil and coolant  ) and i have a d16z6 sitting in my shed that was given to me by a neighbor (he did a b20 vtec swap and he just gave it to me  )

Anyway i noticed that the holes for the intermediate shaft are there but not tapped and this may seem as a stupid question, but is there a proper way to tap the holes back there? I just want to do it right the first time.

  • take a bolt to the hardware store and ask a clerk for a tap the same size and make sure its metric. i believe its a m12x1.5.

buy a tap wrench as well. then make sure the block is level sideways and that the tap is level as well and slowly start turning the tap. take your time since aluminum is easy to tap but it is also easy to strip the threads as well.

its really as easy as that.

i got lucky and m z6 was tapped. I have a ? also do u have to counter sink for the shank on the half shaft bolts cuz of how they are shaped?
  • I have two z6 blocks, one is out of a 93 del sol si and it already had the holes drilled and tapped. The other is from a 95 ex coupe, it was not drilled or tapped.

One hole should be good to go, but the other two you will need to drill out the hole before you tap. I measured the depth of the hole that was already drilled/tapped, and then used some tape on the drill bit to make a stop (you don't want to drill to deep). I can't remember what size the bolts are but m12 sounds right. For an m12 you need to use a 13/32-27/64 bit. So drill the other two holes and then run the tap through, some cutting oil and compressed air will help with the tapping. If I remember correctly I did have to countersink the holes.
  • This thread is something I have been hoping to see for some time now.

I take it that the "landing" is a flat area on the block for holes to be tapped/drilled (if they aren't there already) and an intermediate shaft bracket to be mounted?

I stole this pic from bam-bam

  • Yeah Head, 100% correct on that one
  • good info! as bikewrench said, i have to predrill the holes on the block before i tap, would the depth on my a6 block be the same as the depth on the z6 block for drilling? or is it something different?
  • Should be exactly the same, id measure your bolt though and only go maybe 1 millimeter deeper
  • i also assume i need a drill press, cause a normal power drill wont cut it
  • I used a hand drill with no problems, we're talking aluminum here, its not hard to cut through. Go slow and keep the drill straight.

You will most likely need a drill with a 1/2" chuck though.

Where in northern CA are you?
  • I havent stated the rebulid yet, i gotta bulid funds first, but ill swap soon cause my curret engine is on the ropes. And bikewrench, ill pm u about my location.
