Grinding noise when reversing?

Sup guys. I installed a jdm single zc in my 4wd and I used the clutch kit that was on the motor that i bought. i left the clutch kit from the 4wd on the old motor. the car drives good when going forward but when i put it in reverse, I hear a grinding noise coming from the engine side of the car. closer to the transfer case. Is there a difference in the 4wd and the 2wd clutch? anyone ever had this problem?

so u left the car 4wd right? is it grinding while putting it into gear or grinding while your driving in reverse?

Yea teg i left it 4wd. it grinds while driving in reverse. cant figure it out. you think it might be the clutch.?

hhmm i have no idea sorry
  • no worry man.. hondas don't use a syncro on the reverse gear. a good habit when driving any honda is to put the car into second before shifting to reverse.. it lines the shift forks up and makes it slide in like butter.

the gears go in fine. its just that when the car is in motion while in reverse, theres a grinding sound which increases proportionaly with the speed.
  • most cars have a whine in reverse and unless this problem suddenly appeared and is getting worse i would not worry i say it is your trans of course not your clutch maybe some freash fluid in the trans and thats all you cna really do just see if it gets worse

I know what he is talking about, mine does the same. Its a grinding noise only when you move in reverse. No idea what causes it, i've just lived with it.

My next step was to check the oil level on the trans. if that dont work then idk what else to do.

What clutch are you using haydz?

I'm using the clutch from the sohc zc... I'm thinking it may have something to do with that - possibly a 2wd clutch kit used on it by the previous owner.

If it was a clutch related problem, I would say that it would do it in every gear, not just reverse. Are your cars 2WD or 4WD? Seems intersting that two people have the same issue. It's whenever it's in gear, and moving not when its actually going into gear correct?

    correct. but in reverse only.

:? Which TO brg. did u use :?:

is the throw out bearing on the trans when you pull it apart from the motor? if it its then i used the 4wd Throw out bearing.

Try disengaging the 4WD level so that ur only in 2 WD mode.See if noise goes away.
Take 2 aspirins & call me tomorrow.
  • my wagon does this too, i thought it was from the previous owners beating the tar out of the reverse gear. i have lived with it so far but now i want to tear my tranny apart and see if the gear itself is roached. but that's not going to happen till at least this summer.

Another possibility is one of the rear diff mounts is moving alot in reverse only.

i also have a 4wd that does this in reverse only. it seems like the usual honda reverse wine with gear grinding included. but will back up all day, just noisy. mine has done it for months and the provious owner says is has done it with him for months. im guessing its in the trans, i dont think it has to do with the clutch, throw out bearing or motor mounts. i found a uses trans for 700.00 to see if it fixes this but i cannot come off the funds now. if it aint broke dont fix it motto for now.

Yeah, I just installed a "GOOD" tranny in my rt4wd. I used a Vx flywheel, rt4wd exedy oem clutch/pp/throw out bearing, pilot bearing. New fluid.

I have a grindy second and reverse makes a horrid sound that I'm worried the tranny will eventually break on me. I plan to install my old one that worked perfect (unless I can source out a JDM low mileage one).
