Cable Transmission Problem

I have a 91 RTAWD which has a cable tranny. About 2 days ago it went into gear fine no problems.
Till yesterday I was driving it when all of a sudden i couldn't go into 1st anymore or any other gear...
I stomped on the clutch and no go still, so i turned it off put it into gear turned it on and worked. I got home
tried it again, no go, as i drove it up my driveway I couldn't get out of neutral. So I hurry and turned it off.
Put it in first and started it, as I was cranking her up the car was going with the cranking. Make sense?
Heard a grinding noise. SO i got her up and let her sit. I started her in neutral all fine....but when she is on & idling i CANNOT
go into any gears. When I start her in any gear she will start driving off with the starter as I am cranking it.
I tried tightening the cable and still having the same problem  . I am stuck guys & would appreciate it if i could get some replies.
Sorry if it was so long just wanted to make sure I got most of the story covered. :? :?

  • Sounds like you need a new clutch.

You might be able to make some adjustment to your clutch cable to extend the life of your worn clutch, but a worn clutch sounds like the culprit to me.
  • Either that or your clutch pedal assembly broke yesterday.

Or you put the wrong clutch in like me, I tried to make my exedy hydrolic preassure plate work with a brand new honda disk and got a broken clutch cable. It grabbed good for a run around the block, then I got the same results you're getting

I haven't touched any part of the transmission yet since i bought it so most likely it's my clutch.

What clutch would you guys recommend?

Just to make sure I want to see someone say what clutch will fit my 91 RT, d16a6 of course.

It's probably already mentioned somewhere on here, but I want to just make sure I don't get anything mixed up and mess my car up.
  • Honestly, before you start futsing with the clutch, get under the dash and check your clutch pedal assembly carefully. From the sounds of things, with the way your car went from being fine one day to screwing up the next day, I'm 95% sure it's the pedal assembly.

Search. There's several threads on here about that very thing.

Thank you guys! I'll look when i have the time it's getting a little cold here in Utah. Well another thing is when i pushed the pedal when i first experienced it i felt a pop at the very end. Did it again, pop* than it stopped, and it went down from there.

Could also be the release bearing or fork (both inside the bellhousing) or even the cable itself.

Cracked pedal bracket is still veeeery common.
  • That "pop" could have been the welds on the pivot for the clutch pedal. It could be difficult to see the pivot just by sticking your head under the dash to see it, but if you search on here there's a couple photos of failed pivots/brackets. This will make it somewhat easier to spot the failure if you already know what it looks like.

same problem except mine will go into 3rd 4th and 5th, no reverse,i have to take off like at 6k in 3rd.
  • My friend has been having the same problem. He found out that his pedal assembly was bending. Got it welded and fixed the problem!!! also your clutch cable could be stretched.

I wouldn't replace the clutch till you try those to things. you might save yourself time and money.

Hrmm...idk i haven't even touched it yet it's covered in like 7 inches of snow.
But the clutch was working find before that's the catch. It felt damn good so maybe I'll look into the assembly.
