Rear end slight howling noise at 40 ish mph ?

My 91 rt has a bit of a howling noise that comes from somewhere in the back.. Sounds like it might be the drivers side rear, but i cant tell for sure, all i know is its in the back.. The sound only happens though at about 40 to 42 mph and then goes away below or above. And it seems to only happen when my foot is on the gas too, ive tryed to coast down from 45 to 40 to see if it still did it and it does not, but it doesn't.. Just during acceleration, or if i hold the car at 42 ish the noise is pretty steady... Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help

  • You know I hear the same thing in my 1991 rt4wd sometimes, not that loud though. I disengaged the 4wd and the sound went away. I assume it's just the way the 4wd sounds at that speed? Either way for me I don't think its anything to worry about.

Im thinking since mine sounds more to one side then the other, that it might be a wheel bearing just starting to go.. really not to sure though.. I want to get someone to sit in the middle of the back seat and see if they can hear what side it comes from or if it comes from in the differential itself.
