Should I keep it(PS) or remove it?

I have power steering in my rt 4wd wagon I'm doing a zc swap looking to get around 200 hp making it a daily but want great performance still and I wanted to know if no power steering would be better. I also own a crx with no power steering and it's great don't mind it at all but it's such a small car so it doesn't matter but the wagon is bigger so would it suck?

  • I'm doing the same thing on my wagon because of my CRX.

I also plan on doing the Quaife quick-ratio as well...It's a little tough in a parking lot, but great once you are moving.

...I would recommend getting a non-power rack instead of just depowering the power rack. Should make the low speed stuff a little easier.
  • No power steering in a honda isnt bad they are so light that it doesnt effect it much. I have manual steering in my 87 rt4wd and its sweet. You can keep your power rack it will offer a better ratio just make sure you fill it with fluid and loop it, this is what i did on my integra and it turns just as easy as any manual rack civic iv ever driven.
  • Okay thanks guys, gotta love the work out though lol when u parallel park

its not bad till u bolt on some wide rubber.... i ditched mine and swapped in a complete non PS rack and cross member it was easy with the motor out but i could see it being a PITA with the motor still in. hell even my dodge with PS doesnt turn well till u move just the down of have larger tires......

I started with no power steering in my EF5 w/ DOHC ZC and it was fine, then I added power steering and not only did it make the car feel so much better (no more needing to preload the rack) it also felt like it increased in power too. Completely the opposite to everyone else but I say fuck it, keep PS.

You could go either way. Here's something I heard, but never verified .Some one installed a DA Integra PS on a CRX.One of the reasons was maybe a faster turning ratio.

I don't have ps.. It wasn't too bad until I put on my new wheels (15"x8"/0-offset).. It's harder to turn in tight spaces now.. I think ps would be nice.
  • No PS on my CRX HF and I could spin the wheel around easily in any situation.

No PS on my Wagovan and it's a bear to turn when I'm not moving. Enough that I have to two-hand it at times.

They both have the stock P175/70R13 tires, and I'd really love to put 205/60R15 on there.

    its extra weight, ditch it
  • keep it ..... its a luxury.
  • i just did a ps conversion on my 2wd and i loved it. im kinda use to ps with 88RT. i still need to change the framre that holds the rack and pinion. for now ill still have to go back to the jy.

    wagon........................4ever..........................
  • I drive a 2000 Civic Si with no ps....I don't mind it at all. I got it with ps and I honestly like the way it feels without a lot more.
  • Keep it....

If you are able to keep it without too much fuss, I say do that. I've got a 95 hatchback with no power steering (de-powered DC2 Integra rack). I run 225/50/15 R-compounds and while I don't usually miss power steering, there are a few moments every now and then that I wish I had it. If I were starting my build over again, I'd do it with PS. Now that the car is built and running, it's not worth the trouble for me to add it though.

i ditched the PS rack for a manual Si rack and never looked back. if you have a hard time turning the wheel, hit the gym sucka.

Ditch it. All that shit is in the way when it comes times to work on the engine.
If you can't handle the car without it you should turn off your damn computer, and go work out or something of the sorts. It a damn civic for christs sake.

Keep it. What do you gain with no PS? Doesn't weigh that much and you're not going to gain any noticeable hp.

I completely agree, but it's also completely up to you.

    Exactly!

I have removed p/s from many of my swapped hatches with no apparent benefit aside from crappier steering. I would classify this in the 'butt dyno' category of mods.

Power or weight concerns aside I feel as if not having PS makes for a better handling car at higher speeds like highway or interstate. Just doesnt seem as "touchy" but i guess its all just personal preference.

My 88 CRX si doesnt turn as easy when not moving as and my buddies 90 CRX si and both doesnt have PS. Sometimes it just depends on the rack itself.
It is defenatly possible to use a DA rack in a crx. Havent done it myself but i friend of mine did it a few years ago and loved it, never had a problem either.

Our Wagovan never had PS. Honestly, it was barely noticeable in the car. Parallel parking was a little bit more difficult but aside from that it really wasn't an issue. :)

i would keep power steering if its a daily,
and doesnt PS only take engine power if your turning/ spinning the wheel?
i would imagine it wouldnt make much of a difference in a straight line?
or am i completely wrong :/

PS pump barely takes any energy to move. i can easily spin it with my pinkie finger :P
if you have it, keep it.. i recently installed PS in my 5-speed wagon, and it is so much nicer!

I just got a wagon with ps and I change my mind. Keep it. It's amazing for navigating tight parking spots. I would hate to part with it now that I have a wagon with ps
