Jon-wa-GO-van's Auto-X Blog/Build

Started the build up this weekend, so I figured I should document the process and keep an online record of what I've done and what I am doing.

My plan thus far is to build my RT4WD wagon into a drag/autocross build. It isn't my daily driver so I'll be able to go a little crazy with it.

So far the wagon has a few things done from the previous owner:

-Ebay coils/sleeves
-Blox LCAs
-Blox rear camber adjusters
-Rear strut bar
-Aftermarket header
-AEM Intake

These are good thus far, first thing I'm going to do is set up the car in a balanced way. I've sourced a set of Ground Controls at a good all around spring rate for what I want to do. I'll be grabbing those in a few days, I've got a set of Stainless Steel brake lines that I'm going to install in the next few weeks as well. Well here is just the list of thing's I've got thus far.

-DA Rear sway bar, 22mm
-Stainless Steel Brake lines
-Block off plate for passenger side mirror
-D16Z6 short block...minus pistons, head, oil pick up
-Ground Controls (I'll update the spring rate when I pick them up)
-Koni Reds
-Nitto 555r's for Drag

My plan for the hybrid drag/autocross is to make it were I can strip 90% of the interior for drag racing(except the dash), and leave the interior in for the autox. The reasoning for this is the rules for the drag strip are much more lax then at the autox. If I try to run a fully stripped interior at autox it automatically puts me in EP, which isn't horrible but that sets me up against some too big for their own britches kinda douchebags. I'd like to stay in DSP or FSP with my local Honda buddies(and one confused young tC driver.) And yes I know if I put the z6 in there it will put me in EP, in most cases...but I think I can still get away with it in FSP or DSP.

The other plans will just come into this blog throughout my build, as they are purchased or put in the wagon. Here are a couple of pics of me getting the wagon up to spec and putting a few things in.

Checking all the under pinning stuff, making sure the AWD engages properly. It's like BP under there..hella oil spillage. eBay seals FTL. Rear diff needs a new mount.
213.jpg

Picked up a lower center console, not really for racing butttt it's pretty tits.
214.jpg
215.jpg

Got a passenger side mirror block off, yeah it's blue. Rattle cans do wonders, just didn't have time.
216.jpg

And this is where she's going to set while I work on her...more to come in the next few weeks.
217.jpg

First autox event I'm going to shoot for is in mid February 2011, and maybe do the drag strip sometime after that. Not looking to drag too much until I get a little more power.

  • Motor swap can be done to keep you in Street Modified. It's a pretty gnarly class (engine is completely open for modifications, as long as it comes from Honda/Acura and fits in the unibody without any outrageous cutting). You even get to do a bit of interior removal (rear seats).

That's the class that my RWD Wagon is built for. Have fun.

I'm going to get a few good runs under my belt first then make my first few big decisions. After I get a feel for the car and get settled then I'm going to pick a class and build for it. The EP class here isn't to packed, the guys in the area with B18 swapped EG hatches/Del Sol run in it regularly. I think after some time and some mods I'll be able to hold my own with them just fine.

Hope to see more progress with your wagon any new plans?

Thanks fellas. Did a few things this weekend; Wired up a manual radiator fan switch. Didn't get any pics, forgot my damn camera! Removed the front bumper to find I have a pretty significant coolant leak in my radiator. Looks like just from age, no holes. Going to fab up some conduit piping to make a fresh air intake using the holes in the front bumper.

The lot of my plan is going to start by focusing on easy cooling of the motor; ie, "JDM" hood pop, cut out the plastis grill in the front bumper, and a few strategically placed air vents. By far the cheapest thing I can do right off the back, which works well since this is a very lowwww budget build. I'll keep everyone posted on whats up.

Sounds like you have a pretty set plan for this car. I'm actually auto crossing my RT wagon this up coming Sunday. First time I have auto crossed in a long time, hopefully it goes well for me.

Got a question though, got any plans on what you are going to do as far as alignment goes?

Yeah I'd really like to get a full alignment before we hit the track, buttttt depends on how much time I have. Hopefully we can get it trailered down to the shop and get her all straightened out. The rear has a fully adjustable rear camber kit, need to hook up the front. Hoping Santa brings me a few goodies

Good luck on your run! Hope to see some pics, feel free to write in this blog about your experience and notes you may have. I'd really appreciated it!

Thanks man! Your stickies help out a ton btw, thanks for those! But the rims are Nippon TE37 knock offs. They aren't as flat as the Rota TE knock offs, they have a more aggressive curve to them. But I've got a few goodies coming for it soon, and Christmas break is right around the corner so more progress will be soon to come.

Where to start, where to start, where to start.

Man did I have a blast. This wagon handle amazingly. Defiantly a different monster to control then any other car I have driven.

Going to start by listing my modifications, that way you can see what I have done.
-F&F Type 1 coilovers -22mm DA front sway bar -Suspension Techniques Rear sway bar -Wicked tuning rear toe kit -SPC rear camber kit -Ebay Front camber kit, with skunk2 balljoints -Brand new lower ball joints and tie rod ends -Upgraded to DA front brakes (SS lines, Hawk HPS pads, New rotors) -Rebuilt drums in the rear -Blox RCAs -16x8 XXR 521s with 195/40/16 Yokohama S-Drive tires

First let me start by saying that the my F&F type 1 coil overs are way to soft for any kind of aggressive driving, however I decide to beat the hell out of them anyways, because they stand up to the beating and have yet to let me down. And the Rear sway bar was by far the best upgrade that I could have done, kept the rear end in check...most of the time ;). Oh and I installed 90% of the above parts 1 week prior to the autocross, so I didn't have time to get a alignment yet.

Overall the wagon handles amazingly, did have quite a bit of under-steer, hoping that with some messing around with my alignment, and adjusting the rear sway bar a little more I can dwarf the under-steer a little. However I also think more seat time will help substantially.

Not sure what else you would care for me to post, or what other advice to give you, but feel free to ask.

Good luck with your build, cant wait to see how this thing does.

That's awesome man. I was out at the autoX yesterday as well, coooold as hell! Didn't have my wagon but I was hanging out with my friends with an EG hatch and a 99 Civic Si. The were doing awesome because of the cold, the Corvettes and other race tire cars couldn't hook up at all and just kept spinning out. My buddy with the Si got 4th overall, makes me want to get the wagon out there sooo bad.

    I'm putting together a list to get before the next season;

    -Radiator
    -Bushing Kit
    -Exhaust
-Tokico Struts /paired with Ground Controls *Needed a new set of struts to match my budget, wanted Koni Yellows but outta my price range.

But besides that I'm going to just keep overhauling it little by little, Christmas break is coming in a week...So I'm going to try to get some stuff taken care of before March. Till then I'll keep the updates coming.

And big thanks to jt223539 for putting your info up, if you have any notes or things you noticed let me know. I'm super excited to get behind the wheel and get some real seat time in the wagon. That's all I've heard from all the old farts, the best mod is Seat time  . Keep up the good work bud.

Just a heads up, swaps throw you straight to a Mod class, probably Street Mod, E-Mod or D-Mod. You could also run X-Prepared. All of those classes allow you to run race tires. So, don't expect to be competitive if you venture outside of your locale or you just so happen to live in the same area as a National hot-shoe for the class.

Also, and I'm sure Jaker can testify to this, be careful with drag racing the RT4WD. The transmission casing around the 4WD output is a weak point. You won't be able to go out and consistently beat on it with 4K-5K clutch dumps.
  • Dash-N-CarsDash-N-Cars Senior Wagonist
Yeah I understand the risks in drag racing any CV axle'd car...been doing it for 8 years now. I've already been practicing a clutch burn type of launch, quickly letting out the clutch but not dumping it.

As far as autocross I've already spoken with the tech's and they have told me as long as I don't go B or H series and stay D series N/a that I will run either FSP or DSP, a group dominated by mainly EG hatches, EPs, and a few EFs. So I'm going to shoot for those classes and just build light for now.

After I get some seat time in, then I will step up and decide from then. I've ordered a new exhaust from a CRX for the wagon, going to have to mod it a bit from what I've seen but that's no big deal. Going to cut the large tip off of heat wrap the back end of it. But I'll get some pics up as I get to it, still have 2 more finals to take before I'm on winter break.
  • I guess it really depends on whether you are running with an SCCA group or other organization.

I know for a fact in the SCCA rules that any swap, other than what came in the car at the time moves you to Modified. You can use a different engine that was offered in other trim levels, but the other parts that go along with the swap have to come, too. So, since the D16A6 only came in the RT4WDs, it is only allowed in the RT4WDs. ...and you'd have to completely convert your car to an RT4WD to use the D16A6.

Now, it also depends on your region, too. They may be a little lax to encourage participants to come out, but if you venture beyond your region to a divisional or national event, you may find out that your car is misclassed.

Remember, if rule book doesn't say you can do it, you can't do it.

  • Dash-N-CarsDash-N-Cars Senior Wagonist
I understand that the official handbook says this, but we are a more lax region. But not so lax I can get away with anything, if I do a z6 swap I'm still heavier than most of my competition. But I don't plan on going national or breaking out and doing all of that. I'm a broke college kid, I'm going to the autocross to do what they all just want you to do, have fun.
  • I plan on campaigning my Wagon in STU when I finally get it built...but only locally as I know the Wagon isn't a STU car w/ an added turbo.

I just wanted you to know about what I've learned since I started going to divisionals and nationals a couple years ago.

EDIT - Just noticed you are in Arkansas. When I get mine up and going, I'll have to swing by to one of your regional events. That'd be pretty cool to have a couple of wagons there, eh? :)

    Is that the OMR region?

That would be super awesome to have a turbo wagon playing around. I might even run up to OK sometime to run with you guys. But our region I think is just Arkansas Region, we race in Little Rock at War Memorial Stadium out in the parking lot. Here is the link to our site http://www.arscca.org/index.htm . I'm not quite sure what class a turbo wagon would run, I get enough flack trying to tell everyone it's not an AWD it's basically just a heavier FWD with rear assist  lol

Got a few things done with in the last week. Picked up an D16A6 to rebuild, got my Mishimoto halfsized radiator in, recieved my Monza Pacesetter Catback, put in my Accord LXi 15/16's Master cylender, and cleaned up a bit. I don't have any pics of the master cylinder just yet..and the exhaust is only the axle back section right now, have to finish mock up and weld it all up later this week. Going to re-bleed my brakes tomorrow and rebuild my driver side drum. Need to get some new hose clamps for the radiator and fab up an upper mount. Also would like to header wrap my entire exhaust before the season starts up. But enough yacking, here are some pics.

Hey man just wondering, have you gotten around to any autocrosses in this thing yet?

Im actually heading to my second event in this beast on Sunday. Hoping that with my new motor mounts, traction bars, front strut tower brace, and new alignment I will be able to set some nice times.

Nope not yet, season doesn't start till March. I think I may just park the wagon...I dunno I don't want to destroy it by beating on it. I've got a minty Si Civic Hatchback I'm thinking about picking up to use. Already has rear disks from the DA soo...I'm thinking about just doing that. But I'll keep everyone posted on my experience with or without the wagon.

Good luck bud, try to get some videos!

Time for an update! Decided to park the wagon for good, in my eyes the wagon is a piece of history. Soooo I picked up a new toy to build and tear apart.

1990 Honda Civic Hatch STD(4 Speed)

This is how I purchased it.
    323.jpg

Bought it for dirt cheap, then got to work.

I have the rear bumper on now and all lined up. It's my first body work, so don't judge me too hard

This thing is mint though; the motor is original, all original interior, it has been converted to MPFI and has rear disk brakes from the DA Integra.

    334.jpg
Had to de-rice my new exhaust.
    335.jpg

But there she is. I have one more trick up my sleeve. Looky what I'm picking up Saturday....
    336.jpg

That will be for next season most likely. I know it will shoot me straight to SM, but I'm not in it for PAX or the high competition. I'm in it for just straight fun.

Here is a video of one of my first couple of runs in my buddies 99' Civic Si.
We didn't get my fastest run, my fastest run was a full second faster then this video.

Next event is April 17th, I'm already excited. Hope everyone else's autocross seasons are going well, chime in and let's here it.

I picked it up off of pacesetterexhaust.com , I ended up going with a little bigger than the stock STD. I got the Civic 2-Dr Coupe, 4-Dr Sedan 92-95 1.5, 1.6L C 2-1/4" SP/4" 88-1420. Which I may have to scrap when I get the B18 put in.. I may just make an adapter and make it work.
