D16z6 swap using stock automatic?

Hello,

I have a 1988 2wd automatic. Is it possible to do a d16z6 swap and retain my stock automatic tranny?

    Yep.

It is about the same as doing a multi-point setup.

I kept mine auto with an Si intake and throttle body. Using A6 Pieces. I am going manual with my full A6/Z6 swap with Super Charger

You will need to get an ECU for for a EX auto.
  • Im not much of an auto guy. Whats the benefit of keeping a stock auto trans vs. using the Z6 auto trans?
  • The z6 I found doesn't come with a tranny, thats why.

I'm still debating on the LS swap and converting to a manual at the same time.

I'm right at about 50/50 on this decision:
    1. Swap in z6, stay automatic, save money?
    or
    2. B18b1 swap, convert to manual, spend more money for 20-25 more hp and torque?

My goal is an economical, reliable DD with some more pep-in-its-step than stock.

    Any opinions guys?

The motor swap doesn't help on the highway.. I hate the auto on the interstate... Around town it is nice...

When I throw in my swap, I am throwing in an HF trans and going for highway cruising speeds. The Supercharger will just help me out with getting up to speed.
  • I have an 88 fwd that I dropped the z6 into and maintained auto. Its not a rocket, but is worlds better than the d15b2 and auto. I had to run a few wires differently on the adapter pigtail to actuate the auto lockup control solonoid, but other than that we had it dropped in and running in about 3 days with taking our time. My wife did the z6 tear down and build, and we had some buddies hanging out to help lining the motor up to install. Was actually a lot of fun. I had some fuel pressure issues but now its surprising to look down and see 90mph! I love it, and it was a very cheap and easy swap. Oh and I love it on the freeway. main reason I stayed auto was because I drive long distances to commute. I personnaly didn't see the point of the b18 swap since it would have cost more, taken longer, and yeilded not much more usable hp and tqs for my application. Maybe someday though.
  • I just can't decide which direction to take this car in... :(

wago_dan just scrambled my brains with some practicality.

    LOL...

I eliminated the auto lock control solenoid..

I will say, that my auto was a big surprise for other autos. I can roast the tires on take off and 40-60 jumps aren't bad either...
  • Why eliminate? the auto lockup control solenoid essentially turns the torque converter off at a set rpm and speed thereby improving mpg and hp at freeway speeds. it was only one wire and was not hard to make it work properly.

Hey anyone have some info on where to get a ecu conersion harness obdo to obd1?
also did you have to do the oil pan swap? what about the driver side mount?
please direct me in the right direction as i am ready to get this swap going in. thanks

There are a lot of places that sell the obd0 to obd1 jumper harness. Not sure about the driver side mount but it would probably be best to actually look at it and check to see if it's much different. Quite a few people have done this swap, wouldn't hurt to search and read some of the members rides.

I've searched like nuts, all the jumper harnesses for sale are for manual only!! someone please give me a link.........

I had to make a harness. I also had to make the trans kick-down linkage that goes to the throttle body (secret here was old accord linkage from the junk yard).

    Drivers Mounts are the same.

Oh, and I eliminated the Auto Shift Lock Solenoid, in the shifter(which lets you shift gears)... Not the trans.. When I converted the harness, I could not figure out which wire controlled the shifter lock, so it was very easy elimination, or else I would have had to have a spare key in it all the time..

You can get a manual conversion harness, then a wire pin out diagram and re-pin yourself, It was like 4 wires different.
