Loss of power, engine sputtering, increased fuel consumption

HELP!

Last Monday, i discovered that my car had lost a significant amount of power. It also sounds like it has an exhaust leak and rattles immensely when I rev at low RPM's. It sounds like a "sputtering" noise that causes the engine, exhaust sytem to vibrate, essentially rattling the entire car. Also, it is now consuming a tremendous amount of gas (very niticeibly).

Any ideas, please let me know!

  • Crawl under your car (use jackstands of course), visually inspect every inch of your exhaust, especially where you hear the noise coming from, then test your fuel pressure regulator, just pull the vacuum line off going to it and smell for gas
  • First thing that came to mind when i read this was the condition my stock exhaust manifold was in when I pulled it. There was a huge crack right up the back of it. When i searched around some i found that them cracking, and even pieces breaking out are a common thing. Good news on that is that there is a heat shield on the back of the manifold, so I don't think you'll see anything unless you pull the manifold.

So.... that would cause a rattle. At the same time it would introduce a whole shit load more oxygen to the o2 sensor. I would think... (without knowing really that much about honda ecu's) that the computer would be throwing way more gas at the engine to try to fix the lean signal it was getting which I would think would explain why it's sucking down the gas.

All these are just thoughts stirring around in my head though. I would wait for a few more responses before you go out and start tearing the exhaust manifold off.
I'd hate to send you on a wild goose chase!
  • Bad coil was the thought that came to my head when I read the title
