With the non welding route you will still use the CRX seatback with the wagon seatpan. The wagon seatback does not have the side or shoulder bolster support that the CRX foam needs. If you used the wagon seatback you would have a whole bunch of non supported foam and the whole point of the swap would be lost I think.
I'll shoot you a PM with my number so you can call if you have an specific questions along the way.
So the pan on my '89 non-auto belt seat is WAY different than superhatch's seats or the CRX seats. Ended up doing some minor modifications to the rails to get the wagon rails to bolt up to the CRX seats. Just a hair too narrow to bolt up all 4 to the car. Inside rail is bolted in, got the front outside bolt to bolt up but the seat doesn't like to slide. Gonna leave it like that till I get access to my friends welder to fab something up to get the rear bolt to fit, and get the seat level.
Stoked about the seat. SOOOOOOOOOO much more comfortable than the wagon seat, and it keeps me planted in the twisties 8)
Fej, that change is just so night and day when you see the pictures right next to each other. Do you have any pictures of your wagon seat pan? I'd be interested in being educated in the differences.
This is exactly how I did my civic si seat install, hardest part for me was bolting the upper and lower halves together. Other than that, this thread would have been amazing usefully if i was back a square one.
Good write up. With access to a welder. Would it just easier to weld tabs to the stock Crx rails for the to bolt to the floor and a custom bracket for the auto belt n lap belt??
Possibly. I think there are a couple different ways to approach it if you go in knowing you have a welder. I started the project thinking the swap would be somewhat 1 for 1, which it pretty much is.
The real trick is that the offset of the floor mounting points on the RT is pretty extreme and not like any other 4th gen civic. You can't really make anything else fit (I think) without doing a lot of custom work. The lower pans from the wagon and CRX aren't that different, so there really isn't a reason not to use them as a basis for mounting the rails...which are very different. The backs are VERY different as well and if you just used a wagon seat back with CRX foam and covering I don't think you would get much bolster support.
I would expect that these will stay up until Google collapses, so we should be alright for a while. If you need to contact me directly for any reason regarding any of my wagon projects please use jacobpmueller@gmail.com. It's easier to get a hold of me that way. Best of luck everyone!
89 CRX dx seat, just got the different headrest which i plan on finding a 90-91 headrest to swap in. Did the swap with pliers, dikes, zip tie's and a ratchet set. This is what i used >> my stock 90 seat rails w/seat pan, CRX bottom w/cover, CRX back assembly with seat lever adjustment handle and CRX adjustment handle cover... didn't want to cut up the cover from the civic wagon bottom seat pan. This swap took some time but once i performed it on the passenger side which took me 1.5hrs-2hrs the driver side was only 30min-45min from start to finish. This is one of my best mods yet till this day besides my rear speaker pods. Once you start tearing down the seat it's so simple but yet seems so complicated well to me at first that's why i've been bugging charb to unlock this thread. Thanks a bunch Charb for sending me that link and opening this thread, that link you sent me really opened my eyes in seeing how easy this mod is once you tear down the seat because of the pictures. Once again i will post pics to show my final 89 CRX seat swap into a 90 RT4wd wagon this coming friday when i'm off of work.
I entered my car in a show this past saturday "Battle of the ages @PIR" and if anyone wants to see my seats installed in a video clip check this out, my wagon is from 29sec-36sec >> http://vimeo.com/47802252 shot by: Markers Media :: Battle of the ages.
