Wagon exhaust system

I had a question about the stock exhaust setup on civic wagons. On my 90 fwd wagon, The header comes down to the cat and about 3 feet behind that there's an expansion in the pipe right before it curves to the muffler. That expansion has looks like it's been scraped and dented quite a few times from being lowered (just raised it). Well at about 1200 rpm theres a nasty rattle from that pipe, and when I get under and shake it a bit it sounds like something came off and is rolling around inside there. Would my best bet be to just hack that off and fab a pipe to replace it? Any insight into what exactly that portion is?

If its anything like a JDM wagon that will be a resonator, basically another muffler. The baffles will be loose inside.

Replacing it with a straight pipe will probably give you a tiny tiny small amount more power and make it slightly louder.

Yeah I agree, if you dont mind the noise just have a muffler shop weld up a new piece. That happened on my wagon and I just put new exhuast on it and it sounds awesome, deep and fairly quiet, not a rattle to be heard!
  • i have this same issue, does the cat ever break up? Or is the resonator more prone to doing this?
  • The cat could easily break apart, might be worth putting a new one in. Will get a bit more power and better economy after that too.
