Reupholster vs. new seats?

I'm trying to decide whether to reupholster my front seats or consider buying some racing seats like those in a Del Sol. I drove a Del Sol recently and was very impressed by how comfortable the seats were. Doe anyone have experience with reupholstering the seats? Or experience with swapping over to seats from another Honda model or aftermarket seats. I'm driving my wagon for a four hour commute twice a week, so being comfortable is desirable. :?

Oh, I forgot to ask for any considerations about the seat belts and the electrical connection on the bottom of the seats. T-I-A. :)

Thanks for the tip Pacifier. I did a search and found a bunch of stuff, including links to an old board with pictures and detailed info. This is all such a great resource! :D
  • the belts bolt to the seat rails, not the seats. so you can fit just about any Honda seat (with a pan swap) and any aftermarket seat (with custom brackets) and keep the o.e.m. belts. i've got an FIA approved fixed-back Corbeau bucket - and factory belts.
  • i found a wagon in a junkyard with a decent passenger side seat cover, so i pulled it (just the cover) and used it to reupholster my driver's seat.

    here's my write-up.

whether or not the wagon has auto or manual belts won't matter much. you'll either have an extra hole or have to make one, but either way it's pretty much out of site anyway.

you can search http://car-part.com/ for a good seat cover in the right color. there's no way to specify wagon, just 88-91 civic, and look for a wagon. or search for another part for a wagon to find a junkyard that might have a wagon. that's how if found one near me.

mention of the delsol seats....FREAKIN AWESOME. they feel great. so much more support than the stock seats. very comfortable and they look great. i get compliments when people sit in my car for the first time.

as for switching from stock to other oem honda seats.....not so hard. the stock rails you'll have to mate with the bottom of the new seat. took a bit of sawing and a few new holes to nuts and bolts, but after that, it was in and easy. if you need help...im here =) just take some pics of everything, and i'll direct you from there. i had pics of the mod, but stupid host shut down and lost my pics.

by far, the best mod i have done to the wagon. as someone mentioned a while back... "you're back will thank you for it later"

Hey Gutterslide. My cousin NJ2 would like to try your re-uplholster project that you did on his driver's seat. Great write-up! Dont know if it is something we can do urselves or pay a pro. We'll see. He wants to eventually re-upholster all the seats in the future like I have mine but for now he rather redo his driver's seat.

The hard part is to find a clean stock blue passenger seat in the junkyard that is worth swapping the skin. If any has one they'd like to donate or sell pm me. It really has to seat that can be saved with a cleaning and has no tears. Thanks in advance.......

Here's a pic of his wagon. Can you tell which seats we need.?XJQO75RW4LUH70Y.JPG
