Engine Stalls

My 88 rt4wd is acting up and I cant figure it out. Completely random when it occurs, but the engine will hesitate and stall completely then regain running again. It is always when I am accelerating, then cuts of, dies for a second, then lerches forward and runs fine, sometimes it does a few hesitations in a row. Does any one have any ideas, it feels like the spark is taken away then sparks back, has new plugs, wires, distr, and rotor. Could it be electrical? I am confused.
Thanks

In the front passenger footwell under the carpet is a gold plate with an LED in the centre.

The ecu is giving me a code of 17 blinks, I think that is the speed sensor code. What does that mean?, also my check engine light never comes on, even when the car is first started. Is this a problem, isn't the check engine light suppose to come on when I first start the car and then go off if there are no codes being thrown. Please help, thanks...

Yes it should flick once when you start the engine. 17 is indeed the Vehicle Speed Sensor, is your speedo working? If its unplugged or the cable drive is broken then the code will throw.

Yes, my speedo has not been working since I got it. It looks like the originla owner messed it up pretty good, and I amd not sure but I think the pinion gear has fallen down in the trans housing but cant tell. It is a pain in the neck to get back there, I know that the pinion holder plate and screw are missing and he tried to tye it up with a zip tie. I also know that the cable is not spinning in the dash either. What should I do about the check engine light that never comes on, any ideas? Thanks for the quick response.

start simple check the pod and see if the bulb is burned out or missing. ive seen people take the bulb out just to not have to look at it (cheap lazy people who dont take care of there cars)

turbo teg, you are exactly right, I couldnt believe it but someone has taken the light bulb out. You are good, thanks. Any advice on the speedometer pinion gear or were the cable connects. Thanks again to everyone.
