Trying to undo crank pulley bolt but engine spins in gear.

i'm trying to undo the crank pully, i put the car in 5th, and its on the ground (all 4 wheels) but the engine still spins. What the hell does that mean? I dont have air tools either to pull the bolt off..

ideas/answers?

  • its going to spin in gear anyways .. you have to put a pry bar or a screw driver in between it to lock it and try to undo it then
  • make one of these May%209%202009%20006.jpg
  • I just took off my crank pulley today on my RT and I broke 2 non impact sockets and 1 extension, I ended up having to use a 3/4 drive breaker bar with a 4' cheater pipe and an impact socket ....
  • I took off the starter and put a screw driver in the clutch/flywheel assembly then went over to the other side and used a breaker bar to get mine out.
  • ok thanks you guys! I've just never had issues like this when trying to pull a crank pulley off.

Put it in low gear and have a friend hold the brakes, then try. Holding the engine from rotating is only half the battle, though.

x2 that's the way I usually do it. You can also take the metal cover off the lower part of the tranny to access the fly wheel.

I've also had success with putting a breaker bar on the bolt and wedging the handle against the ground and then bump the starter to loosen the bolt. (I unplug the dizzy to make sure it doesn't start)
  • well i got it off, i did the screwdriver trick, Now the car has a nice and tight timing belt.

    thanks guys!

Here is how I did it. I had a piece of angle lying around. I roughly measured hole spacing in the pulley and drilled some holes thru the angle to match. Then I took two Grade 8 bolts with big jam nuts and attached it to the pulley. I used a 1/2 drive and a cheater pipe to break it loose.

i like the angle iron idea. thanks, would have never thought about that! will be trying it later

honda has the crank puller holder tool for around 100 bucks and snap on sells one for around 60. i had one made out of a large nut that fits inside the pulley with a piece of half inch flat bar welded to it. oreilly auto parts rents them out as well
  • I have had great success with 1/4 inch nylon rope.

Using the #1 cylinder, I get the piston @ TDC of compression stroke and back off about half way so the valves stay closed. Then, I work as much of the rope in as will go, usually 4 to 5 feet.

With the engine in the car, since I don't have a lift, I will use 1/2 inch drive extensions to go out just past the fender, a jack stand under the base of the extension @ the breaker bar wrench and the handle of a floor jack for the needed leverage.

The jack stand makes the wrench sturdy and helps keep the socket secure on the crank bolt.

    Works great!

The special pulley socket/wrench/tool doesn't work for the 88-91 pulleys, as they do not have the hex center section of the later years (92-up).

The nylon rope thing in the cylinder will work, but if the bolt is really really tight, and your cranking on it with a long pry bar, you're taking a chance of damaging or even bending the connecting rod in that cylinder. At the very least you might crush the bearings in the connecting rod from that cylinder.

I was looking around to see what I have that might work when I remebered that I had some angle lying around. it did the trick. It also made it easy to lock it down for torquing the bolt back on.
  • I never considered bending the rod...

    Thank you Jaker!

i ended up just using a impact gun, worked great!
