Engine Identificatio

Can someone tell me how I can identify my engine, and what the series numbers mean or are they just ID numbers? For example, B16B, B16A1, D16A1 and D16A3, what does this stand for. I have a 1988 rt4wd wagon with the stock motor in it, how do I determine the series and engine type? Thanks

    Your motor will be a D16A6..

    Its stamped on the block. Look into your engine bay, facing you where the gearbox and engine meet will be a little flat bit with the code 'D16A6'.

    To break down the engine code..

    D = The series of block. The D-series is an economical little motor which usually comes SOHC but there are a few DOHC variants.

    16 = The capacity, i.e. 1.6 Litres.

    A = The version of the motor.

    6 = The revision of the motor.

    A B16B is a Type R Civic motor..

    A B16A1 technically doesn't exist - they are actually stamped B16A but people add the 1 to let you know its the first revision. JDM motors generally don't have the 5th digit.

    So to break down the B series..

    B = the series of block. Always a DOHC motor.

    16 = the capacity, i.e 1.6 Litres.

    A = the version of the engine.

    2, 3 = The revision. JDM B16A engines don't use this but NZDM, USDM, AUDM and HKDM do.

    Does that explain it? Hopefully that should show a trend.
