Axle vibration

So, I spent the better part of last week tearing into the front left axle replacement. After some trouble seperating the axle from the halfshaft, I finally got it free. I picked up a reman axle at NAPA and put everything back together. Simple enough.
When I went out for a test drive, it did not go well, I had a very significant vibration "steering wheel shake" I jacked it back up, tore it all down again, inspected everything and reassembled. Next test drive yielded same results. What is going on here?? I can't seem to find anything out of the ordinary. Has anyone ever gotten a bad replacement axle? The only thing missing is the "shimmy dampener" Little rubber doughnut piece midway on the axle. I called my buddy who is a Honda mechanic and asked him. He said most remans don't come with the dampener and it should not be necessary.
Your thoughts and suggestions are greatly appriciated. I'm ready to ride the wagon once again!

  • I personally do not like using remanufactured axles because I have had several issues like this in the past.
Is your wagon lowered? The reason I ask this is because several remanufacturers/rebuilders will use EG shafts when supplying axles for EF's since they are similar in length. If your wagon is stock height then you may never have an issue, but if your wagon is lowered then the vibration you are feeling may be due to the use of EG shafts which are a bit too long.
The best thing to do is keep your OEM axles and have those rebuilt. Insist on having your own axles rebuilt and mark your cores to insure you get your own parts back. This is what I practice and have never had an issue since.

Yes, my wagon sits on about a 2" drop. Interresting thought. May have to look into rebuilding mine. Thanks for the insight!

Thats a bummer to hear! Luckily, I just read a thread bout rt4wd budget replacement front axles posted by dukevonDANK. Basiclly to pass on the good news, 90-93 integra DA(LS or Gsr) front axels are interchangable with Rts. Apparently they fit right in but beware they are also 3mm shorter so if you plan on some heavy off road/rallyin.. Excessive use may stretch em and one would be right back to square one. Anyways, check it out and good luck!
