D15 vs D16 cam.

are these 2 cams the same? i have a spare D16 cam sitting around somewhere and was wondering if i put it into my D15 (w/ mpfi swap) will it make anymore power, will it have a smoother powerband?

  • The cams are definitely different.

First off, the CRX Si cam has more lift.......

    D15B2/7 has .321"/.305" lift, 190/190 duration @ .050" valve lift
    D16A6 has .368"/.356" lift, 190/190 duration @ .050" valve lift

The issue arises that with the D15's shorter deck height, using a 89-91 D16A6 will result in the cam being a 1/2 tooth (4.75 degrees @ the cam) out of time. To remedy this, just use a 96-00 D16Y7/Y8 cam gear, only $10 from the dealership.

Also what intake did you use on the MPFI swap? A Z6 intake helps the D15 breath ALOT better on topend. A stock D15B7 put sabout 85 whp to the dynojet rollers. Add a AEM CAI, Stillen Header, 2.25" crush bent exhaust, Z6 intake and D16A6 cam, you get 118 whp.......as I proved in 1999, nice 30 whp gain.

The difference in power output with the D16A6 cam advanced (low end torque, great for automatics) and retarded (slow bottom end)

Also proof the AEM CAI gains over the 3" Generic short ram intake.......

agreed, there isn't one board that doesn't stand to benefit from his insight.

Single cam D is a lost art. Thats why mine is ready to be built soon!
