Extreme vibration when awd selected:

1988 Honda Civic RTawd, 271,000 miles. When the "towing selector" is in it's normal (awd) position I get some serious vibration and can't tell where it is coming from nor do I know how to find out from the driver's seat.

If I disengage the towing selector, via the 10mm. nut on the differential, the vibration disappears and can then drive at any speed with out vibration.

Does anyone have any information on how to isolate this problem? It is my worry that the viscous coupling is shot but from what I have read there are no replacement parts for this, nor is it rebuildable...

I live in Anchorage, Alaska and we do not have a lot of "support" shops available...and it looks like we will have an early winter...

Thanks for your time,

My first thought would be u-joints.

look at u joints, also look for a bent driveshaft bad cv shafts in rear?
  • I was getting the same vibration. Take a look at your rear diff. The mounts could be shot. My driver's side mount was gone and where it bolted to the frame had rusted out. Had to drill up into the rear cargo area and use a u-bolt to secure the rear diff to the car.

The most common culprits are going to be u-joints and diff mounts.
