i know there is a lever under the hood to disengage the 4 wheel drive. my question is can you disengage it and drive it that way? and have it only in front wheel drive. i am curious, looking to gain more gas mileage. any input would be greatly appreciated. i just dont want to go disengage and drive it like that and hurt something.

 Reason:When the lever is disengaged. It moves the gear inside away from the tranny drive gear so the rear drive free spins. As far as improved gas(petrol)mileage.Your idea will bring very little improvement 'cuz most of the time the VC is not engaged till it senses slippage.
The biggest reason is this Wgn. was designed for off-roading so is geared very low like all 4x4s.
 The best way to bump your mileage is to install the largest diameter tire you can find on it(e.g. Dubs ).Try to stay below 205's.It'll probably be 15-16's.You may get around a 15% improvement.
 Check out some of the Hypermiling Sites. This is more fun.Takes mo wurk & you get to work on the Wgn too. Some of the best ideas are lower side skirts, front air dams(or fairings(seen one on a '01-'05 Civic Type R's though I don't know if it was designed by Honda for this purpose)) and lower belly(partial to full). They claim nice improvements in mileage.Check out the driving techiques.I made a 3mpg improvement just switching from a 2O5 to a 175 tyre.
