I tried using search, but I guess my situation is too specific...
[EDIT] Changed S2 to S3 in post below
anyway... I'm at the Library using the internet, cuz not 20 minutes ago on my way to work, I stopped at the gas station, came out and the car wouldn't start.
details: 1991 RT4WD, Auto, 119,XXX miles, 'new' tranny & new dizzy
The S3 light on the dash[tranny gear lite] lit up when cranking, and the car wouldn't start. The gear selector lever wouldn't change gears either, it was stuck. I used the key in the shift selector unlock..slot and was able to shift in to N and move the car, and shift through the gears, but when I returned the shifter to park, it locked in place again. The car cranked, and the S3 light lit while cranking, but would go out when the key is returned to the II position.
I pulled the positive battery cable for a minute to reset things - weird thing, I lost the dash clock time but not my radio presets... anyway, once I hooked the battery back up, she started right up. I noticed the S3 light still lighting momentarialy while the engine cranked, before it caught. It fires RIGHT up when warm, so it was only for a split second. I dunno if I've ever noticed it light up before...
I've now stopped and started about 3 times, no trouble.
Any ideas, anyone?

My only guess w/o out specific knowledge of this auto trans would be that switch. That's all I can think of.
Second, I used the shift lock release and shifted the gears, with the car off, thru N, D, R and the S gears. Several times. Each time, when returning to P the shifter would lock there until I would use the shift lock release. I put it in N and pushed it a foot, but it still wouldn't start. I did give it a shove while it was in P, as I unhooked the battery though.
I think it was unhooking the battery that did the trick, actually...
It may just be the neutral safty switch.... maybe.
I meant to post this in general, anyway to move it?
Thanks!
