(alt.&chk.lite)Question

it seems everytime i take my wag out for a drive the battery light comes on. her is what is happening. ill go to work which is only about a 2 mile drive. the battery light will come on or flicker. and it seems that when my engine gets warmed up that if i shut the car off and try to turn it back on within a few minutes of sitting it off the check engine light comes on as well as the battery light. its not running and codes when i pull the carpet back to look to see if the light on the ecu is blinking. so i got a new battery two days ago and everything seemed to be ok. today i went to go pay my ren and its about 10-15 mile drive the battery light flicked once. and when i cam out of the office after being in there for a couple of minutes the check engine light and battery light stayed on ! is it the alternator a short or some thing else? i have no idea.

  • Ground issue?

I replaced the alternator on mine recently. Last winter, when the car was cold, I would have the alternator light below 2,500 rpm. It would go away when the car warmed up. I just decided to fix it before I got stranded somewhere.

Sounds like either your alternator belt is loose, or your alternator is failing, or you have some bad wiring. Most chain auto parts stores have a tester they can hook up to your battery and alternator to check and see if the alternator is working properly.

As far as the Check Engine lite it could be a seperate issue.

Have you checked the fuse for the alternator exciter circuit. Is the alternator charging the battery. What voltage is the battery with the engine off versus the engine running. The CEL could be related to a blown fuse for the alternator exciter. Sorry there`s no question marks in my post. It`s busted on this computer.

the last battery that was in the wag was super old so im not surprised it was time to get a new one. is the alternator off of a dx engine the same? if so i have a couple good ones in the garage that i could use. ill have to take it up to the schucks up the road when i have a day off and have them check it.
