Looking for a lever so I can control transfer case from seat

I converted my RT into part-time by welding up the viscous coupling. I use 2X on the street and 4X offroad. I've been doing this for a couple years but would like to have the ability to do it in-car. Right now I have to get under the hood with a socket and move the lever manually. It's ok but when in the dark and snowing out not much fun.

I was wondering if anyone has made a shift lever / cable setup so you can shift from the driver seat?

I'm running kumho rally tires. Is there anyway to get more traction out of this car other than welding the rear diff? I need to be able to drive street so welding the rear diff is out of the question.

Don't know of anyone who has done this. Definately wouldn't want to be done while the car was running. Theres a few skylines here that use a similar setup but i have no idea if it was custom or off-the-shelf.

    Sorry. :(

    Would be very cool though.
  • First, why did you want to convert it to manual in the first place.... just curoius what makes that an advantage. Now, given your actual question, it shouldn't be that hard if you have access to a junk yard. I'd look at a heater control mechanism where you move a lever, rotate a knob, or pull a cable on the dash and it moves a heater control lever under the hood... same kind of thing you are looking to do now. Those cables are solid instead of spiral, so you can push as well as pull a level with them. If you use the dash board end of a heater control mechanism, it should have stops on it so it will hold the cable at a given setting, thus you no longer need a socket to losen or tighten the nut as the cable will hold it in the right place.

best thing I can tell you is check the junkyard because the lever was a stock item on the previous wagon. I think D told me that his rt4wd has a lever to change the car from 2wd to 4wd.

85-86 and possibly early 87 does not have a viscous coupling. The linkage for the 4x4 on the transmission is controlled by a solenoid actuated diaphragm. I have a pushbutton on the dash that operates it.

If you want to convert it to manual... i'd suggest maybe using a cable actuated setup... will probably be easier for routing as opposed to lever/hard linkage. Use 2, one to pull engaged, one to pull disengaged.
