90 RT4WD: Clutch / Flywheel Questions

Hey guys,
Did a search, and didn't get the info back I was hoping for.

1) When I swap motors (putting in a fresh A6), I plan to use the stock flywheel and I'll go ahead and replace the clutch/pressure plate for good measure. What are the signs to look for if the flywheel needs replaced/resurfaced? It drives fine now, with no slipping or anything.

2) Just need clarification that for 90-91 RT4WD with stock flywheel, I need a 20 spline 212mm clutch, correct?

3) What are the signs to look for, for a pressure plate that needs replacing? Again, the car drives fun now, clutch engages well, but since I have it all out, I wanted to check it out. I don't want to replace just to replace though, as I have another project going that needs the clutch too.

4) If the pressure plate appears to need replacing, I was considering using an Exedy pressure plate, with an ACT clutch disc (because I've spent too much money on this crap and have these things in good shape already). As long as they fit, I don't think there should be any issues, but wanted to check if anyone has done something similar.

Thanks!

    1) Use a flat edge to see how true it is. That said, a lot will say yes resurface every time. Others will say never resurface as it will burn out your discs faster. The latter info is 100% true IF the machining is not done to the correct surface quality. If it isn't burnt, buff it with some sandpaper to take some of the glazing off so that the new clutch beds properly.

    2) Not sure.

    3) Replace your PP. Clutches usually come as a kit, and they include a clutch and a pressure plate for a reason. If your pressure plate looks okay now, it might not in 30K miles, at which point you might be replacing your PP even though your clutch is good. You've already got everything apart, just buy a kit and call it a day.

    4) I'm not 100% on this but I don't see any reason they wouldn't work as long as you made sure they were for the same make/model etc.

Ok cool, thanks superhatch. Any other opinions on this stuff?
  • Yeah I would just get an Exedy OEM replacement kit and have someone resurface the flywheel. Your car is old already and probably wont see very many more clutch changes before it's put to rest. Maybe one...
