Stock DOHC ZC Dyno Results In! Lets Hear Your built HP Guess

Ive been asked why a ZC and not a B series, well for the simplicity of retaining my 4wd the easy way yet doing something a little different knowing parts are harder to find, dohc zc offers the same bell housing style as a D series, so I figured I'd give it a shot, but its still too slow..

Hello all, been away for awhile busy with life etc. But in doing so I have realized my stock dohc zc is just too slow and getting boring as a daily driver, and my plan is to give it some more get up and go NA style maybe turbo someday but not now. Here it is as it sits stock all the way down to the intake snorkle...

400.jpg

Stock Consists of:
OBD0 dohc zc
Stock Intake
Original PM7 ECU
Wrong D16 SOHC header installed with un-port matched flanges (restriction fail!)
Stock exhuast all the way back :/
87 Octane the day of dyno...
All of this amounted to best runs of:
(115.8HP @ 7,202 rpm's)
(93.6 lb ft of torque @ 5920 rpm's)

Dyno paper, sorry no scanner fail!

I think it would be fun to guess what this engine will make HP wise, considering I have my stock baseline run done, I will complete the build, tune etc and then re-dyno when its all said and done. I would be happy with anything over 160HP but I dont wont to get my hopes up considering I've seen turbo'd zc's make lower 170 HP #'s on ebay kits hmm crap haha. The engine and cylinder head are pictured below, both of which are now actually assembled and ready to go. All of the parts I have listed below are done collecting dust in the closet and will begin the build soon. However the build will commence to start once I have finishied cleaning out the garage (a million boxes from the move) and get my vacation time from work to take some well needed time off! Here we go...

Painted it 2000 deg silver today...

Below pictures thanks to Javier at JG Engine Dynamics before it shipped out...(machine work was worth the wait, call me crazy yes I shipped it from WA to CA because his work is flawless!)

The Build is...
OBDO DOHC ZC
Magilla Sleeves (option for turbo in the future, for now NA!)
Custom CP Pistons 11.0:1 ( .20 over bore for new cyl wall/fresh start used to burn a lil oil)
New oem 89 integra oil pan (.5 quart more oil woot!)
89 integra oil pump pickup
New oil pump, t-belt, all the seals from top to bottom the works blah blah
OBDO DOHC ZC cyl head
Stage 3 port and polish
JG street cams PM7 regrinds
JG Titanium retainers
JG Valves
JG Valve springs
JUN Adjustable cam sprockets
Extrude Hone Intake Manifold
1 off Adapter Plate for B series throttle body to ZC I/M (all port matched)
Blox thermal heat shield
Rywire OBD0 to OBD1 conversion
OBD1 Distributor
Chipped P28 (to be tuned after build)
NGK Plug Wires (might go MSD 8.5mm 32339's for 89 integra)
Chevron 92 octane from here on out...
Injen Cold Air Intake (the black version...)
OBX 4-1 header port matched this time, fail! I know OBX right? Cant find any other header to clear my front diff (4wd still...)
Custom 2.5" Magnaflow Cat back, resonator then muffler (hopefully quiet with the two)
Skunk 2 test pipe
Thats all I can think of for now, for the sake of having fun knowing our 116HP baseline run, assuming the build is finished fire off your best completed HP figures!! Lets hear em... I dont wanna hear anything less than 116! :)

Looking good. I'll say 1mil HP!

I like the fact you did all that work and have a crappy paint job on it, lol. Just giving you a hard time.
  • Hmmk well this is off to a rough start haha. I think it turned out really well including the paint. Considering what it used to look like, a big heap of oily mess. Yeah I painted the head myself for $5 bucks, but I'm happy with how it turned out, if its the block your dissing then your dissing JG EngineDynamics not me.

116 hp isn't bad at all for a DOHC ZC. I would say that is awfully damn close to factory fresh power and also ZC's like higher octane like most JDM motors. I wouldn't be suprised to find out most SOHC/DOHC ZC's are running closer to high 90's, hp wise...

But seeing the work your putting in, don't think you will have to worry about that anymore.

Do you happen to have an extra DOHC ZC crankshaft timing gear you want to get rid of???( Sorry should have asked in your FS thread  )
  • I'm liking that you are going the NA route to see what it does. I have never seen a NA built dohc ZC.

Dude, this is awesome. I am planning on running a zc dohc in my wagon as soon as I have the time to put it in. I have a partial supercharger kit for it sitting on my shop bench as well. I can't wait to see what kind of numbers you get out of a built n/a zc. This should be an awesome car when you get it put together.

    I'd guess 156whp on a good tune.

Personally I would have went with a low comp build and turbo. with the 11:1 comp you are pretty limited if you want to run turbo in the future.
  • FernpatchFernpatch Band Wagon
On another forum I go to there is a guy who has a carbureted zc running about 150 at the wheels so I would think a fully built n/a setup with a good tune could break 170 at the wheels.

Head looks good. But, nobody else thinks the block looks like it wasn't even cleaned before it was painted???

I recently painted my block so I know what a quality painted block looks like. (head was bead blasted, so didn't need to have that painted)

I think its awesome you are running it N/A!!

This block was hot tanked before paint, Javier and I talked about his hot tank that gets hotter than any available on the market for sale today; that he would rather put money into and keep repairing this old hot tank (1965) rather than spend the money on a new one that doesn't get as hot as the old ones used too from back in the day. Is it the casting defects that you see? Cleaning wont get rid of that aluminum splatter.

Both this dohc zc and the one in my car both have casting defects that the paint enhances, these dont look like smooth aluminum painted D16's from 1995 this block is obviously from the late 80's (obd0) I have an obd1 h22 in my prelude and the casting on that block is 10 times cleaner then my ZC block, idk why, possibly age or advancements in machine work.

Oh well, Just making an observation.
When the manifold and everything is on, it will be covered anyways :)

Can't wait to see the numbers you put down.
  • evol911evol911 familEE
Are going to do any prep work to the iside of the block? Knock out any casting dingleberries or radius sharp corners??
  • The inside from what I can see is money...

On a side note I'm installing the jdm headlight washers today  complete with the entire wiring harness, switch, relay all 3 reservoir motors and the reservoir itself. Should be fun!
  • Got an updated pic for now (cell phone pic crap) stuck waiting and looking for a 22mm crank gear with 17 teeth, anyone got one!!? Help! haha I think the cheapest thing on this build was the booty 4-1 obx header shown below (for now hmm) atleast its port matched to the zc

    42.jpg

And one with the header on, single tube style downpipe verified to clear the front diff!

    43.jpg
  • that header for sure clears? any pictures of it on?

interesting... i want to zc swap a wagon too. the problem is just finding a clean rt4wd lol
  • devmanxzdevmanxz Band Wagon
Ya, clean rt's are getting pretty hard to find.
  • sorry to bump old thread but this has me super interested..what happened!!
  • any info yet? :?:
  • Also in for figures.

I would guess in the 148-155whp range (which would be a lot even with a good tune) on that motor.

I also agree that 116whp is really great for a ZC - that is definitely B18 numbers.
  • My guess, around 138-148hp on a rough tune then up to maybe 160ish give or take. Depending on your altitude. With the valve-train set up your going i bet you can get a extra 1000+ rpm out of your red line.
Did you look into crank rod and piston balancing?

I'm going to guess 155hp. We've seen high 150's to low 170's on fully built SOHC D16s, and I'm pushing almost 150 out of a 13.5:1 EW motor with a lot of custom parts (intake, header, crank trigger, etc.).

    -Chris
  • Im going to say 135 to 148.. The Dohc head on the Zc's will actually drop compression unlike the sohc's so his 11to1 will be like 10 to 10.5 to 1
  • wheelie90wheelie90 Band Wagon
    Bump for a fellow ZC!
    nice build also
Im basically doing the same thing but with a turbo
    built head etc.
cannot wait to hear the results

Looks good! I am about to swap my 91 RT with a DOHC ZC. I was interested in how you are saying that the OBX 4-1 Header is the only one that will clear your front diff, because I was considering purchasing a DC header, but now am taken back.
  • I am locking this because the OP hasn't updated this in over a year. 4wd-twincam if you want to update this please contact a moderator or an admin and we will open it back up for you.

Also TyBoHurley you need to search for your answer. It has been covered on numerous occasions.
