Driving with 4WD DISengaged?

I just picked up an 88 RT4WD. I have been getting about 26-27 mpg. This is probably due to an O2 sensor code, and I havent changed the plugs or air filter yet. But Im getting there...

I decided to take it out of RT4WD (with the lever on top of the tranny), to get better mileage. It rolls smoother, and I feel less of a load on the motor, which is great. BUT, above 4500 rpm it starts to get this wobble or shake. You can feel it throughout the whole car. It feels to me like its coming from the tranny itself. I dont remember it ever doing this while 4WD was ENGAGED. Im assuming this has to do with it being in 2WD, so Im going to put it back in 4WD when its light out. But I was wondering, has anyone had or heard of similar instances?

Thanks guys!

Not sure, but have you had an alignment done lately? Possibly have a tierod that needs replacement? One of my friends has a 88 rt4wd, which the drive shaft was removed and it drives fine as a fwd.

I have been driving mine for several hundred miles with 2wd selected, no problems in town or 75mph + highway, had to shift out of RT4wd because of serious vibration issues, no fix on that.....

what type of mileage do you get
  • With 4WD engaged I've been getting 35 almost 36 MPG. A lot of that has to do with my commute, being all 45 mph and maybe 2 red lights at 3AM when there's no traffic on the road. When my wife uses the car she gets around 28-30. But it shows what the car is capable of even with 4WD engaged. I haven't tried 2WD yet.
