Cleaning/washing the engine

I'm planning on washing my engine as there's an oil leak coming from somewhere (I suspect the valve cover) and I want to know where. The oil is just caked on the engine. Also, I'm getting a wicked strong smell of burning oil and/or exhaust in the cabin. Moreso when the driver's window is open, less if I also open the passenger window. I've got a hollowed out cat (temporary of course) and am wondering if this is contributing to the horrible exhaust smell. Will a new cat and a cleaner engine eliminate and/or reduce the smell?

Any tips on washing the engine? I'm going to wrap the dizzy with a plastic bag as well as the fuse box. What do I do with the wires and plugs? Got some Purple Power and a self serve car wash I'm going to hit in the morning.

Thanks!

Washed the engine Sunday night. Put plastic bags around the dizzy and fusebox and used rubber bands to hold them in place. Sprayed a very generous amount of Purple Power degreaser everywhere under the hood. Let it sit for a few minutes to soak in and do itscmagic and then rinsed the engine clean with a soft stream of water near electrical bits and a stronger spray on the block and tranny. Will need to do it again though as there was a lot of grease and oil crud built up over the years. But at least now I'll have an idea where the oil leak is.

Might want to check directly under the distributor, it's "O-ring" has a tendency to dry out and leak.....
