Coil on plug conversion?

I found a guy who had a coil on plug setup from his honda CBR1000 or something like that. Anyone heard of this being done or have it?

yeah my buddies 03 civic Si has this it comes stock..... haha jk but realy unless yer makin big power like over 500hp its pointless even tho' lots of car builders are doing this now a days to spend the money to convert our older cars wouldnt be cost effective. If its cheap and u can make it relaible go for it coil on plug would be gangster.

I have seen this on a lot of 4 bangers.... toyota, honda, nissan....... but like turbo_teg said, it's really unnecessary unless you want to make big power, and have the means to electronically tune the ignition to where you could get some performance gain from it. The cars I've seen it on were all purpose built time attack/race cars. But it certainly does look cool!

Here's a guy in Asia that is making a setup for our OEM Civic ECUs. The problem is that the OBD1 ECU lacks the drivers for running 4 individual coils. There was a product a long while back called UltraFire for the OBD1 ECUs, but it was pretty expensive ($1,000 or more). This one seems to be more reasonably priced, and an evolution of that older piece.

  • You could run the wasted spark system off a ford 4cyl (Ford EDIS). Just have to mount a crank trigger and sprocket then some way to control timing like megasquirt. Its not a coil sitting on each plug but more like a coil sitting where your dizzy would be then... well its mainly just a distributor-less setup.

Google it, its actually a decent idea since you can get all the parts from a junkyard Ford.
  • The coils they are using in the video look just like the coil packs on my 02si.

Christ I just remembered Bisi has coil on plugs, isnt he on here somewhere?

Bisi's setup is pure AEM: AEM ECU, AEM crank position sensors, AEM coils, etc...

:( Yhats no bueno for me then!

I would love to have it just for the gangster affect but a good cap, rotor, and wires along with properly gapped plugs is all any of us normal folks will need. maybe an external coil but again prolly not till about 500hp hell my 411whp teggy was rockin a stock dizzy that was one of the only things stock on it anymore.... planned on makin 500whp and still would have rocked it my problem was me running out of fuel (bad fuel pump) and air (needed some ITR cams)

Mad Cheaper than any of that AEM/blah/blah.... can't even recall how little i paid for the junkyard EDIS components.

Is that a custom machined iron pulley or a custom machined pressed on reluctor wheel? A little machining of the crank pulley to accept the ring?

How does the OEM ECU like not having the ignitor and distributor, or are you running full stand alone Megasquirt?
  • I know megasquirt utilizes the Ford EDIS system. Same system I will be running on my Nissan here soon. Have to have the pulley machined to accept the ford trigger.
  • I had a CBR coil-on-plug setup on my EG that I sold. http://causeforalarm.thecarthing.com/ae ... index.html

I already had the AEM EMS so I just had to get the Twin Fire for around $250 and the coils were about $15 on ebay. I didn't do it for power but to get rid of the unreliable stock distributor.

I hate distributors especially on Hondas. They're always failing. The shaft itself, the coil, and the ignitor.

Under high compression or boost the weak OEM spark blows out. Also, the timing wanders in high RPM.

Nice write up. I especially liked the part about setting ignition timing. I could see people trying to get the timing to the red mark, and ending up with 8 degrees of advance, etc... I suggest you add the part about jumper switch #1 needing to be off (disable multiple spark) to the part about setting the timing.

This is one of the reasons I am interested also in getting direct fire ignition. I'll be spinning my build to 9,000+ rpm and want the accuracy of the direct fire. I also want it fo rthe bling and the cleanliness of the setup without all that distributor crap/plug wires, etc...

I machined the crank pulley out of 6061. Pressed the EDIS 36-1 wheel where the AC drive belt would normally go. Still uses power steering.

No fuel injection here baby, DCOE 40's. :p

    Humpf! Figures. :D

Probably sounds pretty sick. I had dual 40mm Mikunis on my 1986 Civic autocross car, and it was absolutely sick sounding. Made some pretty respectable power too.

Hey D, this is the same setup I'm going to use on a dual carbed D16A1. What are you doing for timing advance with the EDIS?

edit: How are you going to advance the timing? I'm not sure on what to use to control timing with the EIDS.

Mine is also a D16A1 with P29's. You running OEM dual carbs or mikuni/webers?
  • Whatever I find cheaper and whatever will fit my TWM intake mani(Mikuni's are preferred). I actually just started the suspension on my '84 CRX, then rebuilding the A1 trans, then slowly but surely dial the motor in. Using P29's also. And most likely use the Ford EDIS with something along the lines of the megajolt.
