Re-sealing the 4wd Tranny Casing?

I just pulled out my whole engine out of my rt4wd to do a major tune up.

As of right now.. I'm on my tranny.. just trying to re-seal the casing with some partamex grey but I'm having a problem splitting the case open.. I removed all the 10mm bolts around the tranny casing but there appears to be something holding it down. This is not my first time re-sealing a tranny with some sealant to close it off for no leaks but it is my first time doing a 4wd tranny. Just wondering if there is something on the 4wd that is holding it down that is preventing me to do so.

Anybody ever re-sealed their 4wd tranny before? I need help!!

I've never done a 4wd tranny, but I know the 2wd tranny housing is held on by a circlip which seats in the housing and clips into the mainshaft end bearing. There should be a big round bolt maybe an inch and a half in diameter in the tranny housing, a 3/8" ratchet should fit into the square shaped hole in the bolt and you should be able to get it out (should be pretty hard though). Once you get that out you should be able to use some snap ring pliers to get it apart, but it is still pretty difficult even with the right tools. That big bolt should be in the protruding end of the housing (away from the side that bolts to the rest of the tranny).

Woops I should've put some more info in... hmm.. im not trying to TOTALLY open it but just remove all the 10mm bolts (10-13 of them) around the casing to have a 1-2" gap on the casing, just enough to clean it and re-seal it again. BUMP for some more info!

Well it's not going to separate more than a 1/4" or so until you undo that circlip. Also if it hasn't been apart recently you will have to beat on it with a rubber mallet to get the old hondabond to release. Here's a diagram of where to check for leaks in the rear diff also if you're going to be working on that too.

Aaaaaand here is the 4wd tranny. Numero 7 is what you're going to need to deal with to get the housing off.

No problem....... but if it isn't leaking and you aren't replacing any bearings, I would just leave it alone! You could clean it up on the outside of the seal and just apply another layer of rtv or hondabond around the crack too if you want. BUT if you do want to take the housing off, I would really suggest replacing your input shaft bearing while you've got 75% of that job already done. That will give you a chance to check out the other bearings too and clean out the big magnet that sits in the clutch housing side of the tranny.

Oh.. and hey.. I just checked the tranny right now. I see the 1 1/2" circle bolt that your talking about.. its not a 3/8s but a 1/2. Is that right? I just have to unbolt it and undo the snap ring to seperate the case??

Yep that should be it, I couldn't remember if it was 1/2 or 3/8
  • Sorry, have changed hosts and keep forgetting that linux is case sensitive and thus utterly annoying.
