'85 4WD goes bang!

When I put my Wagon into 4WD (push button) there is a bang in the rear-end. When I take it out of 4WD, it goes bang again. Sometimes when I am driving in 4WD, the bang occurs spontaneously and the 4WD indicator light flickers. I haven't been able to find any info on why this is occurring.

Does anybody know what is causing this? Do I need a new diff?

    Have you checked the rubber bushings supporting the diff? Although i doubt that would cause the light to flicker..
    Sorry i'm not much help when it comes to third gens.
