My feeble attempt at making some extended top hats

So I have been seeing a lot of top hats being made and decided I need to make some. I want to lower the front and rear of my wagon a little more and need the extra travel as this is my daily driver. So far I only did the fronts. All I need to do now is paint them and put the studs back in. Let me know what you think.

Feeble attempt? I think you have the cleanest welds so far. Good job!

Man those look just right! What are the specs on the pipe you used? I'm doing this friday afternoon in the shop at school. Need to know what size and what material you used.

Thanks bam. I could have done a better job with them. My next set should be cleaner than these.

    sweet man, thanks a ton!
  • No problem. Hope they work out for you. I'm in the process of painting them now. I'll post more pics later. I'm also going to make a set for the wifey's hatch. Being as it sits on the ground (literally).

Yeah I'm just about done with mine, I'm going to paint them either black or red. But they turned out really well. I'll get a write up done when I finish the welds.
  • Post some pics here or in a new thread when your done. I'm going to do another pair and a set of 4 for the wifey's hatch. I'll post more pics of the process later. I still have to do my members thread.

Well went to install the top hats and I gotta get a hole saw to cut out a bigger hole in the mount for the top hat. My pipe diameter is a wee bit too big. But they are all done, paint is drying right now. Pretty happy with the way they turned out.
  • I had to make mine a hair bigger too. Post some pics.

Here is a quick sneak preview, I'm working on the write up still...and they aren't 100% done just yet but here are some pics to let you see how they have turned out.

Here is a pic of them right after I sandblasted them. I finished up the welds and sand blasted out the imperfections.

Here is a pic of them painted, I used a anti-rust paint. I went with red because it was on sale at Advanced Auto, and it matches my GC's

They are a work in progress still, and this is my first fab/weld job. So what do you think?
  • Good job. How tall are they from the base to the top?
  • Dash-N-CarsDash-N-Cars Senior Wagonist
I haven't measured them yet, but the pipe height I cut them to 1.500" all around.
  • Dash-N-CarsDash-N-Cars Senior Wagonist
They are just a hair under 3.125" Base-to-Top
  • I should have measured mine. I think mine are taller.

Yeah I was looking at yours, on the top of your extension pipe, did you ad like a dome shape piece of pipe on the top?
  • That is the upper and lower cup from the original top hat. The pipe is used was about the same diameter as the original opening. I did have to shave the lower bushing a hair to fit in there.

PSI, those are SiCc dude, how do they feel on the wagon?

Thanks man. They ride good. I need to replace the inner tie rod (has some play) and make some for the rear. Then lower the car some more and see how it really feels.
