Converting second gen beam axle to coil spring setup

Does anybody have any specific info on the differences between the second-gen beam axle/leaf spring setup and the fully independent strut setup? It's my understanding that they both were offered on the second gen wagons, and if there was a way to convert a beam axle rear to struts I would be very interested.

If it helps, I'm looking at a 1981 wagon.
