naw not here Davens we have a weird ass new law that just got set in not to long ago there is no bar motor unless the ref aproves of the swap being safe and smog legal here in Socal my buddy just got a ref ticket today going to the EIBACH meet so he has to see if he will pass BAR its not going to happen with a GSR in a 94 EJ1 COUPE its OBD2 being converted to OBD1 even my ZC wasnt smog legal in my old wagon and it was a single cam all motors must pass CARB inspection for the swap
  • When I talked to a BAR ref up here in NOCAL, I was told as long as you are upgrading to a newer motor(from a newer model or related model) and have CARB rated aftermarket parts, the motor should pass.

JDMshuttle was your motor stock, or did you have bolt-
    ons(intake,header,...)?

Every motor importer I go to lists the D16z6 as the ZC Vtec.

fully stock when i dropped in the motor and went to smog it
  • Hey JDM, check out this link and tell me if you think this is old info or not. It sounds like the ZC Vtec should be OK since it's so close to the z6.

yea it looks good but that is someone who has tried on a B-SERIES as for D i dont know your car didnt come with V-TEC so be careful i work at a shop and you know how many shops get through the system so just heed a fair warning i have seen a lot of friends not be able to pass REF or BAR its just who you know i dont worry about smog i just get it done thats why my car is stock and the motor i am building is out of the car and when it is time to smog it in two years i will pull out the new one and put in the old one or just get it done the other way  so its up to you i dont know what to tell you i know they are cracking down on us in SO CAL

A good deal of that information is not correct. I've REF'd a LOT of cars, and I can pretty much tell you what will and won't fly.

Its a myth about the engine must be newer than the car. You can put a 92 b17a in a 93 coupe, because the b17a was also sold in 93.

As far as parts, those should match the engine, not the chassis. Who comes up with these rules? I dunno, but thats what 95% of the refs have told me.

Don't fear the ref, its the cheapest smog you'll ever get just about. I've refd cars that didn't need it to save $20.
  • Just talked to the ref in SF, he told me the following:

To replace a motor you need all the emissions equipment from the doner motor, and it would be best to document this with pictures/part #'s. It's also best not to have any aftermarket parts, stay stock until you pass. So going from non-Vtec to Vtec is OK.
As far as the JDM motor thing goes, the USDM emissions equipment has to function exactly as it would if the motor was USDM. In other words the JDM motor has to be physically the same as the USDM motor and the emissions equipment has to work properly.

I also talked to a sales person at H-motors and they told me they sell a lot of ZC Vtec's as a replacement motor for Z6's. That you just need to match the ECU to the o2 sensor. Granted it was a sales person.
