Bars in the rear side windows?

i seen a wagon for sale yesterday and it had skinny bars going horizontaly accross the rear side windows. they look pretty stock what are they for?

damn it i knew i should have take pictures. hey if you know anyone in lewiston theres a wagon for sale but its pretty beat up.

The bars are called Jail Bars from the looks of it, or at least thats the term people came up with. They are supposedly wagonvan only but bam just said he saw a 90 with one when the wagonvan trim was only 88-89. Here is the link where they are being discussed.
