"Rebar"

I was told today by a seller, this his Wagon needs a rear bumper and re-bar?

What does "rebar" mean? I searched it came up reinforcement bar. Is that behind the bumper?
If so, would it be a small task, or a big pain?

Thanks guys.

It's not that big a job, you just take out 4 bolts behind the body and the whole unit comes off, "Rebar" and all. They are usually rusty though, and may not be accessible from the dealer new. Best bet, usually is a donor.

Perhaps someone can chime in with a supplier of new ones.

5 mph crash proof. That's all. For North America, there's a requirement for vehicles to survive a 5 mph crash with no structural damage whatsoever. Cosmetic is OK, but if the frame/unibody suffers any damage, the vehicle fails the test. That's why those heavy ass "rebars" are in the bumpers.

The rest of the world (more or less) is OK with those lightweight bumper supports.

But lightweight bumpers add hp and look cooler lol. I know alot of people that would hack up the front bumpers to accomidate intercoolers efectivly making them a light weight.
  • Actually those also determine how the car crumples in an accident and helps shift some of the force across the front of the car in a head on collision (or offset). I've driven my EP3 across town without one and the front gets super loose. At the very least think of it as a front end tie bar.

Also...technically that -is- the bumper. The plastic thing we all call bumpers are actually bumper covers or bumper faces.
