Idle issues

Soo...ishort story woke up this morning put oil in my car drove 110 miles got off freeway and idle out of no were is rouch and jumpy. And it sounds like its almost misfiring.

Has anyone had this problrm before ?

Also when you drive the car is like normal it only happens at idle like at a stop light or traffic.

Does it go up and down from like 700 Roma to 1500 then back down? If so you need to adjust your fitv. It sits under the throttle body. There are two coolant hoses that go to it that may need to be removed from it to get it off. On one end there are two 10mm bolts. Remove those and the cover. Inside there is a plunger that you can screw back down with a set of needle nose pliers. Screw it all the way down and put everything back together.
  • ok i will try this, it does that evry once in a while, but the idle is more of the problem, it like ridle rough like it almost misfires...but actual driving is fine like i said above ! you can hear it in the exhaust its not super smooth like it was, it is like a pop pop pop pop pop in the middle of all the smoothness if that makes any sense !
  • sooo stopped by my grandfathers mechanic because thats were im visiting, and they scoped it with one of those machines with the computer screen and wires comming off it cant remember the real name haha... and they said its misfiring at idle rpm's like i suspected..

so they took the VC off and found that the spark plug o ring gaskets are leaking oil into the spark plugs and causing it to misfire. so i went and bought a new gasket set and real spark plugs tongiht non of that autolite bullshit my moms boyfriend did when he tuned up my car without permission !

keep in mind this guy re did my brakes too and bolts fell out while i was driving and caused my brakes to wobble real bad and i could barley slow down ! ( he works for JFC racing building racecars ) how can you fuck things up this bad !
  • changed the spark plugs ( which def. needed to be changed ) and put on a new valve cover gasket kit... also wiped out the spark plug tubes and holes to soak up all the oil that was in there... put it all back together and it helped a little bit... but it still idleing funny and dropping one cylinder at idle.

    any thoughts guys ?

you may need to replace the cam tower seals. they go bad on f22's and flood the spark plug with oil
  • Make sure the rotor is tight in the dizzy cap. Sometimes they loosen up and wobble, or sometimes they fall completely off and ruin your day. Also check and make sure there is no moisture in the dizzy cap. Most likely its something plug/plug wire/dizzy cap/rotor related.

Have you been able to narrow it down to which cylinder is actually misfiring?

This sounds crazy but it's an easy way to see which cylinder (if any) are misfiring at idle.

With the engine running at idle simply take a pair of insulated handled pliers (preferably the needle nosed/bent nosed ones) and pull off one plug wire (at the spark plug hole/cylinder end, not the cap) at a time, and see which one the idle is not affected by. If each one of them being pulled causes the engine to idle much lower and/or shut off, and they all do it the same then you don't have one particular cylinder misfiring. It could be a general issue such as fuel pressure, spark delivery as in distributor, coil, ignitor, rotor button, etc.

If one particular cylinder has little/no effect on the idle quality then that cylinder is dead. This would limit the causes to a bad plug wire on that cylinder, a bad spark plug (which is easy enough to verify - move the plug and if the misfire follows it you've got a bad plug), or worst of all, low/no compression on that cylinder. If it's a multi-point fuel injection set-up then that cylinder's injector might be bad if it's got spark and good compression.

    BTW:

Has your check engine light come on since this issue arose? Does your check engine light bulb work?

Haha funny you should mention the check engine light working. I got a car from this guy and he took the bulb out to try and sell it. Funny thing was it was a stupid code that took 5 mins to fix and i got $500 back!

its probably a valve... some engine makes the pop and misfiring sound is b/c of a valve flooded
  • I replaced the spark plugs yesterday and it still does it but ill try and take the wires out while its running anyways just to check I'm go check my dizzy right now ill let you guysknow as soon as I do !
  • took apart my entire distributor clean it all up rotors nice and tight.

also pulled off the plugs one by one while running...each one made the motor run even worse so im sure there all firing...

so i have no clue whats going on...

also drove all the way home today another 110 mile trip...drive fine the whole way as soon as i got off the freeway and into town and stuck in traffic idle still messed up...

when the valves went bad in a gsr motor i had it idled really bad and i could not figure out what it was. It drove ok otherwise besides the idle.

I sure hope this isn't your problem, it sucked for me.

yep bad valves or valcum leak
  • skinnyskinny Senior Wagonist
Do a valve job and see if that helps
  • i think i just lost compression in one of the cyl.

when i pull the spark plug wires out one by one while running, there second one from the left ( dizzy side ) cant remember what number that actually is...it only effects it a tiny tiny bit...but when i pull all the others it effect it tremendously.

will do a comp. test tomorrow and see whats up...im running out of ideas except the valve job because i dont know nor trust myself to do it...ive only supervised a VJ once and my buddy did it kinda quick...
  • yeah and...

    mang...

  • FINALLY got around to doing a compression test....

    190/90/180/180.....180 ish area...

what to do what to dooo......
