Proof the wagon can tow!

Well guys, I finally got my wagon up to my parents house to test out the trailer and hitch. I've excited and impressed by the results. First off let me say it was a 250 mile trip with 2 huge grades. I averaged 29 miles to the gallon while pulling the trailer empty. Much higher than I was expecting. Here are a couple of the cool pics!!! I was able to load up my Honda 450 and my dads Yamaha Raptor 350 on the trailer at the same time and pull them around. Fairly easily. On the flats it pulls great. The grades might be a little slow, but it's definitely do able. I never saw the temperature gauge move either.

    what did it all weigh?
  • right on! How much weight is that you think? 1250?
  • good craftsmanship on the trailer better than OE.

what exactly have you done to the engine to match all the towing weigh? and the total weigh of the trailer and tongue weigh? thanks for posting.

Not sure what the trailer weighs. I'm estimating between 400-500lbs. I'm going to try and get the trailer weighed when I get back to Boise. The only thing that I have done to the motor is the high compression pistons. Everything else is OEM spec. Exhaust and even intake. I'm pulling my quad back to Boise tomorrow so we'll see how well it does up the grades as well as what kind of gas mileage I'm getting with about 800lbs behind me.

nice now i want a tow hitch on mine. ware did you find the hitch and how much was it ?
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
I built the hitch myself. It's 100% custom as is the trailer. The only other thing I have done to the wagon is the full Skunk2 suspension. I'm probably going to put in a new clutch before I go to Dune Fest this year in Aug. I'll be pulling both quads out to the coast over 500 miles.

that first pic is mccall. ive been there plenty of times. did you have to take that up whitebird?
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
yep, the first picture is in McCall, good eye. And yes, I had to take the car up the Whitebird. I took it up with the trailer empty. Managed to hold 55 up the hit in 3rd gear. We'll see how the brakes hold up on the way down. I think it's going to be slow going up Horseshoe Bend grade though.

Well guys, the first official trip with the trailer and hitch is over. Was a great trip, no issues at all (not even kids throwing up in the back seat). So, I had me, my girlfriend, and both my girls in the car (ages 3 and 5), all our clothes, blankets, pillows, the quad on the trailer, my tool box of tools, and the 2 sand tires for the quad. The car did great. I was very impressed. Was able to hold 50+ up all the grades and up to 70 on the flats (none of the roads were over 65mph). The first half of the trip back I got 23mpg, but I had a nasty head wind - I'm guessing at least 20mph winds. The second half of the trip was much better. I'm guessing over 26mpg. I haven't filled my tank up yet to see. But I'm at 115 miles and only used a 1/4 tank of gas. I'm going to get under the car this week and do a thorough check over on the hitch, but from my quick checks everything looks great, no cracked welds or anything.

You sir are a brave man. I wish we had a clapping emoticon.

Good to know the wagons are good for it. I know my stock RT4WD was struggling going up the mountains skiing/boarding full of gear, 5 adults, and a roof rack adding a little resistance. My motor is a bit tired though I'm sure that would have a bit to do with it....also the roads in the mountains here SUCK! Ever heard of frost heaves?? They'll swallow you whole!

Gawd I love Bam Bams trailer so much! What an awesome idea and it's so well done.
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
I don't know how much the trailer weighs yet. I haven't had a chance to go out and look for a scale. I'm guessing around 400lbs. It's not that heavy. I can pretty much grab the back end up with it hooked to the wagon, so might even be less.

Sweet trailer, and good thinking on the recessed E-track. I'm thinking about a dual-sport bike, and will tow with the wagon also.
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
You shouldn't have any problems with that - he he

I know i have seen hitch's on crx's befor, i wonder if they would fit the same?
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
Ya, they do have hitches, but they don't allow you to remove the stinger. It's just a bar with a ball on it. I didn't want that cause I'm kinda partial to my shins. So I made a custom one.
