You'd be surprised what you can get for cheap. I bought a 90 DX hatch a few years back for insanely cheap, and it had some wear and tear but was pretty solid.
Eh live and learn, my little brother has done the exact same thing before. He was in a 85 bronco though and suffered a little scratch. He hit a Civic and it was MESSED up, maybe totalled. I have almost caught myself doing this a few times as well.
Yah lucky it was on passenger side, I have a funny bone sticking out of my shoulder that I call my collar bone from getting T Boned lol. I really doubt the civic wagon would hold up as well as a 2004 toyota corrola haha. I love older civics, but thank god I was in a modern car.
Just got back from looking at the hatchback. It's a pretty sweet deal for $500. It does have 258k miles on it, but it was driven by a little old lady. Interior looks mint except for the cloth on the seats, looks WAY better than my wagon did at 200k. The little d15 runs, but is pretty damn tired - it is the original engine, so I'm definitely planning on swapping the D16A6 out of my wrecked wagon and into the hatch. It's a 5speed so thats good, my crx si tranny is trashed from the wreck I'm pretty sure.... but I know a guy locally that has one for sale. I'm pretty excited the body is mint it just has faded ass paint, looks like nobody waxed it for 20 years, or cleaned it very often. That's no problem, at least all the body panels are straight unlike my wagon.
So I guess I'm going to be a HB owner now, I'm just going to call it the mini-wagon. I'm definitely still going to hang around on this board though, I like the people here and Honda-tech is just absolutely ridiculous. So I guess I can help be a test-bed for seeing how '89 HB parts match up with my '90 wagons parts.
I'm going to get the title signed over at a notary tomorrow, so then I'll work on swapping the wheels and suspension and stuff and eventually the engine.
Some more bad news. I finally managed to get the bent as fuck hood off of my wagon, and it's not looking good for my D16A6. The driver's side motor mount pulled itself right out of the block, stripping both bolt holes, and breaking the aluminum around one of them. Not good!! I don't know if this is something that can be welded to be fixed..... I did have an idea though..... I have taken the power steering and AC off of this engine, so there are 4 big holes tapped in the front of the block (right around the corner from where the mount is supposed to bolt to the block). I was thinking that I maybe could have some kind of custom motor mount fabbed up so that the stock driver's side mount could be bolted up to it and then to the AC and power steering bolt holes.
Anybody ever had a problem like this? Any suggestions? I'm going to find my camera and get some good pictures of it in the next few days.
So I have seen a lot of people running aftermarket traction bars/crossmembers, and noticed that most of them don't use the front engine mount. If they are OK running on only ONE torque mount (only the back one) and two side mounts, would I be OK running TWO torque mounts (front and back) and only one side mount?
Yeah, the only problem is that the mount I broke is the only one that mounts directly to the engine. All three of the other ones are on the tranny, which I find weird!
Ok here are some pics, they were all taken with my phone though so they kind of suck.
First of all, I pretty much got hit in the passenger side wheel, and it broke my steering knuckle, smashed my brand new strut, and sliced my brand new brake line in half.
Second, here is the crack in the block and where the mount stripped out. View is looking down behind the lower timing belt cover with the upper cover off.
Last, here is a picture showing the other tapped bolt holes I have in the front of the block that I might try to use to fabricate another mount.
It does have 260k miles on it, but for the whole life of the vehicle it has only ever been driver by two old ladies. I looked up the weight for an 89 hatch and its stock weight is 2088 lbs, so after I get the AC out of it it should be right around 2000 So it's probably going to handle like the wagon minus the weight of a huge fat guy. I'm pretty stoked. The paint is real faded but I'm sure it'll look nice once I give it a wash and make the trim black again.
I went to go try and start it today, and good thing I didn't because there was no oil on the dipstick. I put in the one quart I had hoping that would top it off, only to realize it all came out the oil pan because the drain plug had been removed for some reason. So I'm gunna drain the 500 mile old royal purple out of the wagon and put it in the hatch. Hopefully it will start and I can drive it back to my roommate's shop tomorrow.
I'll make a new thread about how I'm going to make a custom driver's side engine mount later on when that comes to fruition.
Yeah I'm pretty stoked about the interior being totally intact. I had a bunch of broken vents in my wagon, and had removed the whole HVAC unit (bad idea.... no defrost), so this is gunna be a nice change!! I'm definitely removing the AC though.... The lighter blue carpet on the floor is actually house carpeting that they cut to sort of fit, no too bad! They had some custom seat covers made, which you can see on the seats, but they don't fit very well and are all sun faded now, so I will probably put the front seats from the wagon in there (if I can vacuum all the glass out.....)
I tried to start it today after filling it up with oil, but turns out it didn't have any gas in the tank either. I hope they didn't pull the plug out of the tank, I guess I'll find out when I try to put gas in it here in a couple hours. I just got it towed back from the old people's house to my roommates shop, the tow truck lady lived two blocks away so I called AAA and she was there in 10 min!
Anybody got any ideas for parts I could take off of the wagon for use on the hatch? I hope the rear hatch struts are OK because the HB needs them bad. I think this HB hood is actually made of steel unlike our light little aluminum wagon ones... that kind of sucks.
So I'm going to try and start it today so wish me luck ppl!

tailgate struts are much different on the wagon vs. hatchback
and idk about you, but my wagon definitely doesn't have an aluminum hood
Our hoods are steel? The hood on my wagon is sooooo light compared to this one on the hatch. Maybe I just need to lube the hinges. I eyeballed the struts and they look exactly the same to me... what would be different, just the stroke of the strut I guess?
No luck getting it started after I put gas in it. Might just have to swap in the D16A6 right away.
Here's some pics I took with my fat fives on. I might have to sand them back down to unpainted, I dunno if I'm digging this panda look, a little too jay-dee-ehm for me. And an old paper I found after I folded the back seats up. Sept 14th 1998!

THE ENGINE LOOKS LIKE SHIT!
Seriously, though, it does look like an awesome deal. Those things corner on rails. And it doesn't look beat.
