Tranny fill bolt removal

I just got done loosening my transmission fill bolt, and SWEET JESUS! The bolt was put on by Satan himself. I remembered in a forum somewhere, that someone said to be sure to pop off the fill bolt before the drain just incase the fill would not come off. This is so you wouldnt be left without a ride hehe. After 1 hour of ghetto impact wrenching with a hammer, pulling on it with all my weight, heating up the bolt, WD40 treatment, stuff thats supposed to loosen bolts quickly, I finally put a little full body Foot Power on the bastard while my bro held the wrench in place it popped loose. I thought I had surely stripped it! , but then I went to look and the SOB was loose and still intact!! OMG never again, i put it back on with recommmended torque.

Anyone else had this problem?

Yeah, this happens alot. Not so bad, since the guy before me couldnt change oil because the oil pan bolt is stuck. So he just added 3 quarts and called it good!
  • Have I?

Seriously. This thing is misplaced anyway. And then it doesn't come off. Sheesh.

Could have just taken out the vss... easier to fill from the vss anyway
  • I had mine taken to a quickie lube place just so I didn't have to mess with mine. You have to fill it horizontally if you use the fill hole right? I didn't feel like doing that. They had to replace one of the bolts, not sure which.

I will try the VSS trick next time though.

Yah i finished the job this morning in daylight. The hole is horizontal , so i bought a funnel with a tube , but the bastard did not reach. So I had to go to autozone and get a skinnier longer tube with a lnoger hose for 1.50 not bad, and it worked great. right tool for the right job makes everything simple. I guess you fill till the tranny overflows from filler bolt on level ground. I filled it till it overflowed, let it drain a min, then put on filler bolt. Made a big mess, but it's ok I guess. My tranny still grinds sometimes going into reverse : /

Man i wish i knew about the VSS going into it. I guess now mine is free of the rusty shackles, I have to loosen it every few months to make sure it doesnt bond itself together again lol.

Fuck the VSS that hole is way too small!! Take out the reverse light switch, its right on top of the tranny, and you can get it out with a 19mm open ended wrench. The hole is WAY bigger its super easy to use a long funnel and fill that sucker right up.

^^ thanks for another option. The "normal" fill hole usually isn't an option for me, as i've only owned b swapped efs until my wagon :)... barely enough space to get a ratchet in between the frame rail and the fill hole.

I'll try the reverse switch... if my s80 has one in the same position.

IIRC there isn't one in the same place on the s80 but I believe there is a rather large vacuum nipple on top of it that acts as a breather tube. You could probably fill it through that.

    thanks, i'll check that out...
